I see no basis for such predictions, just the slow steady beat of the conservative party trying to paint a picture of this country and Obama that fits their narrative for the next election. If it's repeated enough over the next 4 years I'm sure there will be people that believe stuff about which way he leans and which way the country leans after FoxNews repeats it enough. I tried counting the amount of times of "center-right" on Fox a few days back and lost track at 70 in one day.

Absolutely - and is it just me that thought Obama's base wasn't the far left? I know that the current republican crop spin their pitch towards the far right, but I didn't get that feel from the Obama campaign. Surely he wouldn't have spent so much time defending against accusations of socialism if that was the case?

Of course it wasn't. His base are the more centrist democrats and republicans who saw the country going down the tubes, and in some cases were willing to switch parties to take a chance on a guy who might bring some change to the administration.

Um. Obama isn't in the White House and won't be for over 5 weeks from now. Bush has been for the 8 years. We have plenty of direct examples to bring up.

That's not what I'm reading, though it could all be lies. According to multiple sources in the news, he has had very cool relations with most of the old guard that has been implicated.

Heck, one story I saw claimed that the Lt. Gov hasn't even talked to the crooked governor in about 2 years. (And there is nobody refuting that claim).

My old home state also, and it's always been a pretty rough and tumble place politics-wise. I've seen no evidence (and you can bet there would be people screaming it from the highest mountain) that the President Elect has been any part of it.

there may be no connection at all, but Obama has worked with these guys and was aided by these guys to get were he is now. I know that don't maake him bad, but is does put him in the circle.

His voting record in the senate places him among the most liberal. It doesn't seem that far left because you're in agreement with him. You think the current right is far right because you're left of center. Nothing wrong with that. Just saying it's all relative.

All of the pre-election talk about cutting defense spending, raising taxes for the wealthy, starting a national health care program, defending pro-choice... each one of those is left and combined puts him pretty far away from center.

His post election decisions and rhetoric have been more center which makes me happy. Just don't kid yourself thinking Obama ran on a centrist's platform.

I didn't say that the current right in itslef was far right, but that they feel the need to pander to their far right support. That was the whole point of the Palin nomination, the desire to energise their "base" of the hardcore religious right. I've not seen a mainstream liberal candidate go after the far left in the same way, if they did both the right and a lot of the centre would crucify them.

I didn't say he ran on a centreist platform (although he obviously appealed to a lot of those in the centre, and a lot of moderate republicans too), but he certainly didn't run on a far left platform either.

He ran on enough of a centrist platform to get centrists to vote for him - which is sort of the definition. He was still quite liberal, of course. But he captured far more of the center than McCain did, suggesting that he was closer to it.

Well, it probably more reflects the center running from the GOP as fast as they can.

But looking at voting records isn't going to effectively differentiate between a Bay Area liberal like Barbara Lee, and a Bay Area Speaker of the House that must take a more centric tone in her rhetoric. But their voting records are likely very close, as the legislation that is truly out there doesn't make it out of subcomitee.

Bullshit! McCain is much closer to the center than Obama ever was. Obama won the centrist vote due to the economy collapsing late in the election cycle. History has showed that when this happens, voters tend to fire the party of the current administration.

While Obama did win solidly, don't underestimate the 47% or 48% of the vote McCain won.
