Proposals to execute pedophiles make headway in US

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The idea of executing child rapists, even when there in no loss of life, is making headway in the United States.

The Louisiana Supreme Court last week upheld the death sentence for a pedophile, and the governor of Texas is soon to sign into law legislation to that effect.

In 1995, Louisiana was the first state to adopt legislation authorizing the death penalty for child rapists.

Ten years later, the movement to make pedophilia punishable by death really picked up steam after nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford was raped and buried alive in Florida by a man with a prior conviction for sex crimes.

Various versions of the "Jessica Law" sprang up all over in the country, imposing in most cases a minimum 25 year jail sentence and the wearing of an ankle bracelet for life for raping a child aged 12 or younger.

But in some states, elected officials amended their versions of the "Jessica Law" by adding the possibility of condemning a pedophile to death.

They include Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Georgia and Montana.

An overwhelming majority of lawmakers in Texas chose to join the list. Texas is responsible for a third of all executions carried out in the United States in the past 30 years and for two-thirds of those conducted so far this year.

The draft law is now on the desk of Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has promised to sign it.

Crane and Foley aren't!

Are/were any of these men pedophiles?

Of course they are... emails are the same as the act if you're a Republican... if you're a Democrat...not so much.

A law like this is a wonderful incentive for child molestors to kill the kids when they are done raping them. Well, what worse will they do to the guy? The penalty is the same regardless of whether the child is killed.

I've been asked a few times why the penalty for attempted murder is less than that for murder. The explanation is pretty common sensical - it creates something that would prevent a person from finishing a person off. So, let's go ahead and make child molestation a death penalty offense? Gee, now there's nothing more that they can do if the rapist kills.

Stuff like this is a Constitutional travesty because it seems to be cruel and unusual punishment.

Stuff like this is also a pragmatic nightmare because, as stated, you take away any legal disincentive to kill somebody. In this case, brutal though it was, the defendant came up with a cover story and called 911 - which probably saved her life. Anybody here think that had he known he'd be sentenced to death for it if he got caught that he would have killed her to try to cover it up?

A bad, bad move.

Well unless you are a Republican Functionary.. then you use the RNC Computers when by LAW you are supposed to be using the White House computers that have stringent archiving of email.....then you can just delete all the stuff that pertains to your wrongdoing.. ethically and otherwise.

I agree with everything you said except for the bit about cruel and unusual punishment. I have misgivings about this law for the very reason that you have pointed out, which is that it may give incentive to finish them off. I am not however going to worry about how harsh it may be, Guys like that do not deserve any mercy from the courts. I will only concede giving it because the alternative may provide them with the incentive to kill a kid.

And you could probably come up with a similar list for democrats, as I am sure someone now will.

I would certainly welcome any Republican to do the research and compile a list similar to this.

There will be some. However, the number of Democrats who prey on children are far, far fewer than the number of Republicans that do so.

What is it about Republicanism that creates this mindset that it's OK to violate children?

I call BULLSHIT! Got anything other than a list of mostly local level politicians to back up your claim?

I don't have to prove what you're trying to claim.

You're more than welcome to do the research and come up with a list of your very own.

Don't like what your Party represents? Then do something to change it!
