Considering the history of the 20th Century, I'm surprised more Europeans don't feel the need to have protections from their government.

I read this and was wanting to know what the Eurpeans though and what the americans thought, and why they felt so on their positions.

A lot of Americans feel the need to have weapons becuase of our laws... Europeans feel the opposite, but it is also becuase of the laws and how we both were broght up as a society.....

(generally speaking) we're not as paranoid as the average American we haven't felt the need to draw up a constitution that lets us build up small arsenals to defend ourselves from our own government.

Indeed. Isn't it weird how many things the American founders did in response to what the government did to the American founders?
1) Freedom of speech and religion. Yeah, they had just fought a bloody war against a king for things like that.
2) Right to bear arms - they'd have still been putting up with it unless they were armed.
3) Freedom from having to quarter soldiers - yeah, we hated feeding and sheltering the government
4) Freedom from unreasonable search and seizure - um, guess what we had before
5) Right to due process of law, free from double jeopardy, etc.
6) Speedy trials and assistance of counsel
7) Right to jury trial
8) No excessive bail or fines, or cruel and unusual punishment

I mean, people say, "There oughtta be a law." I guess the forefathers had good reasons, right?

After a century in which more than 100 million Europeans were killed, shouldn't you be a bit more paranoid than the average American?

Given that we killed a significant fraction of those europeans, perhaps they have a reason to not to want to be like us.

Just what exactly do you think your own government will try and do to you that you'll need a gun for?

if you feel threatened by your own government, enough to feel in fear of your life... do you really think something as powerful as your government can be stopped by you owning a little pistol?

why not just vote them out of office if you feel threatened enough by them that you need a gun to protect yourself from them?

horseshit - we didn't come remotely close to a significant fraction, and we certainly didn't start either of the two big wars. The Europeans killed themselves without any help, be it the Turks going after the Armenians at the beginning of the century, or the former residents of Yugoslavia killing each other. In between the Russians held a third of Europe hostage.

Our country was founded largley by those who fled oppression by governments of Europe. No ruler here ever murdered 6 million of their own citizens. No person has ever been put to death here by the government because they refused to subscribe to the "official" government religion or, for that matter, because they even had a religion. Can't say that about most European countries.

The same thing that I think a mugger would do to me if he knew I was armed. Nothing.

Mabe had the Irish had similar gun ownership, the Black and Tans would have been a little nicer.

Who said anything about starting them and yes you did a significant amount, namely through carpet bombing civilians.

Unless there is a source this quote seems (because I have read it before) invented to bolster the swelled heads of Americans who need to own every type of high powered assualt rifle on earth.

Europeans have very little faith in their government just as all people the world over do (and should) and if you look at grass roots organizations, socialist/communist/anarchist organizations and the ability for mass protest and rioting in Europe at the drop of a hat you would not even need to ask wether to take the quote seriously.

So you actually do think that you having weapons is any sort of deterrent for the government? Priceless.

First of all, if that was any threat to the government, guns would be outlawed right away since you have given the power to the government to legislate as they see fit.

Second, they don´t need to take away your guns because not only they have bigger and better guns but also because they have a much better weapon. The media.

And lastly, the media is such a wonderful weapon because although the U.S brags so much about "free speech" the media will not use it, and thru partisanship has you all controlled and disinformed.

Enjoy your guns...

The British had more and better guns than the Continental Army, too...and we know how that came out.

what the fuck has Hitler got to do with 21st centuary America?

Do you seriously think your government might start mass genocide of it's own people and the only reason it isn't is because it's population might form into merry little bands of militia, all roaming around with their precious little pistols?

I really can't believe i'm reading this..... i knew the average American was a gun nut paranoid, but this is taking the piss big time :D
