Darius11 12 #102 April 11, 2007 Lived in NY most of my life. I think there is a big difference in a racial slur then what he said. If someone calls me a sand nigger or towel head I would get pissed, but if they say that Tan Iranian well lets see I am Tan and Iranian so I wouldn't get pissed. He said Nappy headed hoes. It was obvious in his tone that he was jesting. He was not making an assessment of all the players. As for all the shit that is out there on TV, on the radio it is laughable that people are reacting like this to Imus. Who no matter what you feel about the guy has done so much good for a lot of people from all races. I swear if I ever have the money I am going to make the SandniggerSpickniggercrackercunthoslutprickduchbag show staring me and all my friends. You can watch if you want or turn it the fuck off. That will be the mission statement and the logo would be a big middle finger. (Hostility not directed at you but at the PC environment we live in today)I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
Darius11 12 #103 April 11, 2007 QuoteThat doesn't make it any less hurtful. It's beyond frustrating for me to try to explain how the phrase "nappy headed ho" from my playground days, to high school, through college and my adult life still has the same sting to women. Having gone to school with mostly white people until college I don't think there's an equivalent statement that would make those who don't, understand. I hate to tell you this but we all were made fun of for something. If you have bad memories for people making fun of you don’t feel alone. Kids are very cruel and we all have been made fun of for something. The way we look the way we talk every thing. I first came to the US when I was in 4th grade. A poor(we had no $$) Iranian kid who couldn’t speak a word of English. Oh I also was fat and had glasses. This was the late 80s Iran was hated even more then. So trust me I got my share BS to deal with, and I know how it feels to be hated for no reason at all. I don’t carry that shit with me I just put it as what everyone goes threw in there own way. Life goes on.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

The LaCrosse guys that were falsely accused of a serious crime or these girls that had some idiot say something really crass and false about them but there wasn't any issue of criminality? I will also take wagers on which school gets the larger donations...... ... dorbie 0 #107 April 11, 2007 Quote OK, but what do YOUfind acceptable about calling identifiable college girls "hos" on national radio? There are more objectionable things on radio, yes I find it lacks taste, and the girls themselves made a better case than Sharpton did. My objection should not lead the guy to get fired. Hos is not on the FCC list of exclusions (if it were he'd merely get fined), the girls have civil recourse, the corporations are private entities, YOU can tune out or buoycott the sponsors. Perversely the mentions of hos in the context were intended as a compliment to say how badass these players were, such is the vanacular. I have a greater revultion at the current self serving pantomime over his comments in the so called "land of the free", than I do to the broadcast of his comments. People talking about their "hurt" over words should be treated with massive skepticism, especially when they routinely use those same words themselves. eflynn 0 #108 April 11, 2007 In regards to music, there is PLENTY of backlash regarding the images or women and how they're portrayed. If you don't follow the music closely, you simply won't hear that much about it unless something "big" happens like the '04 protest at Spelman College. It's wrong either way. Out of a rapper's mouth or Don Imus' mouth.

eflynn 0 #112 April 11, 2007 Yes, it's possible but ignorance is no excuse. The fact that he referenced the "Wannabees vs the Jigaboos" in School Daze shows some awareness of the term's meaning. He's since said he understands how and why it was offensive but that doesn't change what's already happened.

He's since said he understands how and why it was offensive but that doesn't change what's already happened. You can keep complaining all you like we're not buying it. All these people demanding an apology and saying that they won't accept the apology before it's been given are the ones who should be ashamed. You think that gains any traction with anyone? Do you have any idea what that makes the community look like? The only thing you're interested in as a lynching over a phoney pretext. You cannot reserve words for black use, use them yourself frequently and casually then call for the sacking of someone who used those same words because he is white. That is racism, like it or not, that is the ugly reality of this sorry episode. The irony here is Imus is more comfortable and in tune with diverse cultures including hip-hop than most whites hence he used the term (having heard similar use many times) not realizing that he's not insider enough to get away with it without people wanting to pile on for the beat down. Yea, SUUUUUUURE, and I've NEVER met a black person who called their hair nappy and you NEVER already said blacks do this all the time in this thread. You can claim it all you like, it doesn't make it so, and my experience with other blacks directly contradicts your claim. I know who i am and i go about with my life,, so i take that it is better to get in and wrestle with the pig than to just see it as it is and stay outta the mud... i dont know,, maybe you prefer to get in on their level and deal with it,, i think its better to just hold your head up high, laugh it off as ignorance on their part, and go about your life, life is toooooo short to be upset,, live life and Enjoy

Hambone 0 #122 April 11, 2007 I agree, out of all of this the most saddening thing is the idea that some words are ok for some people to use and others not to. It is as was mentioned earlier in this thread. With freedom comes responsibility. Go buy a "hip-hop" album, count how many times these words are used. How is it ok? How can you hold one group accountable and not another? That is hypocrisy. Lets solve this, and make a list of words that people, ALL PEOPLE, can't say. When you do this you can't say, i can say it cuz I am Black or White or whatever, but you can't cuz you aren't. Its obsurred. Bottom line, people need to realize that they need to learn to let things roll off their back. This is ridiculous! Stop being so sensitive. Listen to O and A, they are quite entertaining, but don't listen if you might get offended.Yeah...You need to grow up. -Skymama
masterrig 1 #123 April 11, 2007 QuoteQuoteSad to say but, you are right. I saw the evening news and they had the girl's basketball team on. One by one, they spoke. You could see in the eyes of women who hold a 3.0 or better GPA, women who are going to be teachers and doctors, these women who only wanted to celebrate a hard fought victory, you could see in their eyes, the hurt because of someone's spoken words. Words really do hurt. saw parts of it too. I have to say that I agree with Kallend that Imus was a jerk. But disagree with the whining about him losing his job. Then he apologized publicly. With that, it should have been over. But now, after seeing how the 'girls' and their coaches are playing on this, I have to now say "WAAAHHHHHHHHHH". I also think these girls are being led down this path by someone with an agenda also. If they choose to do so, they could be, right now, celebrating their hard fought victory and not even giving this any more time or thought. I always thought the precedent set by "Little Timmy vs the State of Michigan" in the use of the "Sticks and Stones" defense was still strong in the country. "Words really do hurt" Yup, suck it up cupcake, waaaahhhh "We have the freedom of speech but, with the freedom comes responsibility for what we say" Damn straight - totally agree. He made a public crack, he made a public apology - all that's left is he works to avoid it in the future. I think public humiliation, loss of job, being shaved bald and neutered,, is over the line. ___________________________________ You make some very good points. I guess, I really let that news segment get me. Maybe, 'cause I've been there. Come to think of it, everyone's had their 15-minutes in the limelight... how long do they have to drag it out. Imus apologised, everbody has had their say... game over. Hell, I've been called some ugly things in the past and probably everyone on these forums has too! We lived through it. I probably couldn't even remember who called me what. Now, it's time to see how tough everyone is. Time, is a great healer... let the healing begin! Good job rehmwa!
