Town Bans Foreign Flags Flying Alone

Recommended Posts

So why do so many people get up in arms about the Rebel flag? It's a great looking flag.

Geez, they've been reworking every state flag that has any resemblance.

Any country's flag flown outside of a business without the American flag in a superior position, is making a statement, which is what they intend to do, if you ask me.

Sort of, but even when talking (or writing to a web site) please issue statements without thinking it through.. Oh this looks pretty... could be the dominating statement, for some.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying.

You enter a Mexican resturant, all of the employees are dark skinned and can barely speak English, and there's a single Mexican flag flying, without an American flag beside it or above it, is a slap in the face to the country, its freedoms, and its strong economy , for which they came here in the first place.

If they were so proud of the country from which they came, why did they leave in the first place? It should have been able to supply their every need.

If I moved from Fl. to Texas[and I love Tx.] I wouldn't fit in too well, if every time I turned around, I was singing the praises of Fl. After awhile people would tell me to shut the hell up, or go back where I came from.

I'm sure your country has the same type of flag etiquette as we do. Would you, as a people, take it lightly if someone decided to raise the Stars and Stripes above the Union Jack? I think not.

If you believe flags are symbolic, then the rebel flag symbolizes something that is quite inconsistent with the values of our society.

If, on the other hand, flags are just pretty bits of cloth, then fly what you like but don't get upset if someone burns a flag of flies a different flag above yours.

Somehow I can envision your toliet training ...sitting at the business end of an assault rifle, with Mom saying, "you will make dooty now, boy!" ;)

Lighten up Francis.

Have you ever heard the expression," If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."?

Turning this country into a pile of socialist mush isn't going to benifit anyone in the end.

You can't move into some neighborhoods and put an old truck up on blocks. The people get up in arms about it, but the truth is, that truck isn't harming anyone. Should those people be told to lighten up?

I recall reading an article that recently, your prime minister told radical muslims in your country that if they didn't want to get with the program and accept the country as it is, to take a hike.

Of course, it didn't make front page news here.

Based on some reading that I've done, that is only true if you believe the Civil War was ONLY about slavery.

Doesn't have to be ONLY about slavery. After all, Mussolini made the trains run on time, but we still despise fascism on account of its evil parts. The rebel flag stands, among other things, for the acceptance of slavery.

The elected town board in the remote Mojave Desert community voted 3-2 on Tuesday to enact an ordinance making it illegal to fly a foreign nation's flag by itself.

Flying another country's flag, whether it is a British Union Jack or the flag of Mexico, is punishable by a $50 fine and 30 hours' community service, unless it is flown below an American flag.

"Old Glory is sovereign," says Paul Willis, a retired carpenter and board member. "You can't fly any other nation's flag higher than the American flag."

Well the Carpenter has it right for you can't fly one Nations flag Higher then the US but Law planed law stating “unless it is flown below an American flag” would be incorrect they need to work on there knowledge of flag Etiquette. If your going to do something at least do it right.

When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace. (time of peace includes now as US has no current Declared wars going on)

No, the carpenter has it wrong. It's not how you CAN fly flags, as a matter of law, it's how you SHOULD fly flags, as a matter of etiquette.
As a matter of etiquette, one should fly flags a certain way. So if the town simply passed a resolution SUPPORTING the proper use of flag etiquette, that would be fine. But the moment they passed a law which made adhering to proper flag etiquette MANDATORY, subject to penalties for violating it, that law violated the Constitution.

Com'n John. So not true. Like I said in another post. I wear wear mine because I'm rebellious. I spent a good part of my life in the deep south. I have quite a few good black friends. I can walk into the hood (Orlando,Fl.) w/ my rebel ballcap on) w/ pleeny backup from my black bros. It's how you treat people om the street babe. Edit to add: I wouldn't wear it in a neighborhood where I wasn't known. . I ain't that stupid;)

How so, Counselor? What amendment would that be?

Unless it's a Confederate flag, of course... sorry...I keep forgetting that "some animals are more equal than others"...

Nope, same standard. Any law or ordinance that would (or does) outlaw the flying of the Confederate flag anywhere on US territory would, IMO, violate the First Amendment of the Constitution.
