QuoteHawkins121, one of the most vocal of the "conservatives" on the forum wrote this in another thread. It seems like a whole topic of its own:
***The government allows me to live my life. Earn a living, live in a decent place, go skydiving etc etc.. The gov provides us with stability that we often take for granted....
Whatever they have to do to protect the freedoms I have I will support.
I'd call this a definition of modern conservatism. But does anyone here remember what we USED to call it?
Before this thread deteriates into the usual hate-filled Bush bash, let me remind you that Bush is not a conservative and one of the reasons his poll numbers are so low is because of a lack of support from his conservative base.
That said, please continue with the build up to a full blown Hate-Fest.

I disagree on both (main) points. From what I've seen, Bush's philosophies, i.e., socially, economically and re: foreign policy are classically conservative from an American standpoint.
I don't think Bush's numbers have tanked due mainly to loss of his conservative base (although that's a smaller part of it). The conservative base will still give him grudging support as the better alternative to the liberalism they dislike. Bush's numbers have really tanked because he's lost the cross-party "moderate middle third". So, he never had the solidly-liberal third (of course), and he's now lost those among the "moderate middle" who held their noses & voted to re-elect him in '04, leaving him with just the solidly-conservative third as his support. His current poll numbers more or less reflect that.

What we have here is an inability to distinguish the truth fron convenient fantasy.
I have never said Bush was a conservative. I have also stated at least a dozen times over the years that Bush was never my guy during the primaries but that I only voted for him because of the hysterical alternatives offered by the Liberals.
As usual you make things up so you can get in a personal insult, truth and reality be damned.

Completely disagree. Bush has gotten trashed by Conservatives for the out of control spending, expansion of government, and failure to protect the border with Mexico, lack of SS reform, lack of tax reform, etc.
The moderate middle is his Conservative base.

Well, maybe the most dogmatic conservatives would like Bush to be even more conservative than he's been, especially on taxes (but, then, something' s got to pay for all the post-9/11 military spending, now doesn't it?), but I can tell you that there's virtually not a single thing the man has said or his Administration has done (or refused to do) that doesn't make a liberal (and even many a moderate) want to projectile vomit.
Hey, that's a pretty good definition of a conservative right there.
QuoteThe moderate middle is his Conservative base.
I don't think so. By definition, it's solid conservatives that are his conservative base. The (cross-party) moderate middle is proud to not have much die-hard loyalty for either side.

What a load of rubbish. Bush told us he is a conservative (of the compassionate variety). Are you saying he LIED?
The reason his numbers have tanked have less to do with his conservative base, and a whole lot to do with his having demonstrated his untrustworthiness, his inept management of the Afghan war which shhould have been over 3 years ago, his inept management of the Iraq war, his inability to produce any outcome on his "no. 1 priority", his hopeless management of the public debt, his trampling of the Constitution, his bringing the USA into disrepute around the world, and a few other things I can't be bothered to write down.

How far back into history are you willing to that argument?QuoteThe reason his numbers have tanked have less to do with his conservative base, and a whole lot to do with his having demonstrated his untrustworthiness, his inept management of the Afghan war which shhould have been over 3 years ago,
Are you saying that there shouldn't be troops in any country three years after the biggest part of the job is over?

No, I'm making a point that should be obvious to any careful observer, that had W not completely lost focus on account of his obsession with Iraq, the Taliban would be extinct and OBL would be dead or taken prisoner. Both the Afghan and Iraqi campaigns have been characterized by total ineptitude from the very top.

The day may come where we have to fight them on ten fronts at the same time.
When their forces are overwhelmed, they simply blend into the crowd, and with our pc way of dealing with such situations, it's going to be difficult to crush the enemy.

What a spectacular, egotistical non-sequitur.
If it were even SLIGHTLY relevant I'd say it helps prove my point but sadly it's just a random, angry gesture of no consequence.

Probably liberalism or Socialism. The Repubs speak and write from convenience. If it seems right to throw out something about socialism being evil, yet prescribing what is essentially Socialism under the guise of conservatism, they'll do it and refuse to discuss it. Welcome to America....
