GoneCodFishing 23 #1 February 2, 2017 Need to do loads of marking on black PU coated ripstop which also has a DWR coating on it on the outside, and so far nothing i tried leaves a usable mark, which needs to be reasonably narrow as i have to transfer templates, and durable enough to stay in while cutting and sewing multiple layers. I could live with it being permanent if it can't be avoided, but even grease pencils fail to so much as draw a line on it Any tips on what you guys use? GoneCodFishing 23 #3 February 2, 2017 No, chalk doesn't work. The coating seems to be too slick for chalk to mark, and i tried anything form taylors chalk to bogstandard blackboard chalk.

GoneCodFishing 23 #5 February 3, 2017 Awesome thanks. Another user pm'd me sugesting the same. I had been looking for white sharpies but the actual brand (sharpie) don't make them, as apparently they can't get white pigment to work properly, and the ones i tried weren't good enough for the job. sundevil777 94 #7 February 3, 2017 How are people to know which products will not damage fabrics/webbing? The grease pencils don't have any specific assurance about that. Do fabric/webbing manufacturers have a listing of items that are OK? Perhaps in Poynter's manual?People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

I don't know of any other product that has been tested and data has been published. Lots of folks use Sharpies by default. mxk 1 #12 February 5, 2017 I bought a box of Listo assorted color pencils. I like them, assuming that they are safe to use on canopy fabric: [inline "listo.jpg"]

There're regular 'discussions' within the climbing world as to whether sharpies, or felt tip pens in general, damage nylon, in particular ropes. The UIAA did a test and found they do 'affect' nylon, whereas independent tests sometimes find they have no effect. There's a lot of confusion depending on brands, etc, and the fact that because the test are specific to climbing ropes if there is any damage only usually the sheath rather than the load bearing core are affected by it. With that in mind, and seeing as webbing obviously does not have a sheath protecting it, i personally avoid solvent based markers in webbing or anything load bearing. Just to give 2 differing arguments. The UIAA notice http://theuiaa.org/documents/safety/Notification_about_the_marking_of_ropes_by_climbers.pdf and a 'test' by a manufacturer who must be said, doesn't manufacture rope http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en_GB/qc-lab-can-i-use-a-sharpie-to-mark-the-middle-of-my-rope.html
