skymama 35 #1 December 10, 2003 Magnolia tree falls, crushes jogger on her daily run By Laurin Sellers Sentinel Staff Writer December 10, 2003 TITUSVILLE -- A 27-year-old jogger on her daily run was killed early Tuesday when a towering magnolia tree that had stood for decades suddenly toppled onto her, police said. Amber Farrell, a wife and mother of a 6-year-old girl, was running along Raney Road in the La Cita Country Club subdivision at 6:15 a.m. when the magnolia's rotting roots gave way, dropping the 40-foot-tall tree into the middle of the road, Titusville police spokesman Todd Hutchinson said. The tree's trunk apparently struck Farrell from behind, leaving her buried beneath the limbs and foliage that completely blocked the street, he said. Unaware that anyone was beneath it, residents called city maintenance workers to remove the tree. Hugh and Ina Brown of 3740 Raney Road were still sleeping when the workers knocked on the door to tell them one of the magnolias in their neatly manicured lawn had fallen. Hugh Brown walked outside while his wife, who recently broke her leg, watched from the window as the workers began cutting the tree with a chain saw. "Suddenly, this one guy was waving his hands in the air and yelling, 'Stop! Stop! There's a person there!' " said Ina Brown, wiping away tears. "When I found out someone was under there, I just went crazy." Meanwhile, Farrell's anxious husband and mother reported her missing when she failed to return from her usual five-mile jog. They began searching the two routes she had taken almost every day for the past five years. As he drove down Raney Road, Andre Farrell noticed the fallen tree blocking the road, assumed it was an unrelated accident and headed back home, about 1½ miles away, Hutchinson said. A short time later, he received word that his wife had died. "They are very distraught," Hutchinson said of the family. "They even asked the detective to leave." Amber Farrell's co-workers also were grieving at Alicia's Hair Salon, where a wreath on the door signified sorrow instead of the holiday spirit. "She was my childhood friend," said shop owner Alicia Wilson, who described the young stylist as a "great mother, wife and friend who would do anything for you at any given moment." "She was just a very special person," Wilson said. Late Tuesday, residents and police still were shaking their heads in disbelief about her death. "What are the odds?" asked Beverly Phillips, who lives directly across from the Browns. "There was no wind. The tree was beautifully green with no dead limbs. I guess it shows you when your time is up, it's up." Hutchinson said an expert estimated that the tree was 70 to 80 years old and that although there were no outward signs of decay, the tree's roots were beginning to rot. "It was such a freak accident," Hutchinson added. "Here we have all these knuckleheads robbing banks and committing burglaries and they're just fine. And here's a woman who was getting up early and taking care of her health by running, and a tree falls and kills her."She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

jverley 0 #7 December 10, 2003 Jogging is unsafe! When is the government going to start regulating such dangerous activity. It killed Jim Fixx, now it has struck again. Personally, I avoid such dangers. It's hard to run in the otter.John Arizona Hiking Trails

NoShitThereIWas 0 #9 December 10, 2003 That is a sad story and just confirms my beliefs about why some people shouldn't be afraid to skydive simply because you "can" die. You can die doing anything in this world, even just going for a routine jog and getting killed by a magnolia tree.Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say." EricaH 0 #17 December 10, 2003 That is so crazy horrible. Jeesh. I'm a firm believer that when your time is up there's nothing you can do about it & if it's not up - you can do almost anything & stay.... Wish all those ninnys that said skydiving will kill you could hear this story. However, it is a horrible insident & huge vibes go to the family & friends. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
RoadRash 0 #18 December 10, 2003 First, condolences to the family. Second, I agree with everyone else, when your time is up, well, its up and there is not much you can do about it (actually, nothing you can do about it!) I have always said that you can die doing anything and freak accidents like this just proves it. You only live once.
