This is a fun trivia contest, no real prizes, but this isn't easy and it'll send you all around the 'net looking for the answer.

Look at this sat image: Clicky

Do you see the plane in the middle to the right of the F-14? The one with the HUGE wings?

What is that plane?


I'll get you started, that's a sat image of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Aerospace Maintenance and Recovery Center (AMARC).


It took FlyingFerret and I about 5 minutes of hard googling to come up with the answer. Can you beat 5 minutes?

Those are all scrap planes. They don't fly anymore.

However, they *used* to fly. A large majority of the stuff there is from the Cold War.

Although the U2-C is on the same field, that's not the plane.

The actual plane isn't very well known and there weren't that many made.

I'd guess a B17 based on the thick wings although they had 4 engines not two

You're sort of close as well, but its not a B-17.

That seems to be as close a match as we could find. The wingspan is at least very close to the c 130, it almost look longer. The top silhuette is very weird, hence my question to Dave in the first place...the wings are very long and very thick to only have two engine mounts.

If someone can beat the B57, I am impressed, but I think that is it.
