Would You Be Honest?

Recommended Posts

Would you be honest and admit to your doctor that you skydive? As many of you know, I've decided to get my A....however I need to work at more than most. I started going to the gym, but feel this alone is not to make me a fit skydiver. Seeing that I'm taking AFF next season, I have some time. So, I've decided to start physical therapy so that my hamstrings are loose, resulting in a greater range of motion in my legs. I'm going to the doctor today so that he can write me a prescription for the physical therapy so that my insurance will cover the costs. I'm wondering if I should tell him the truth if he asks: "so, why the sudden interest with being in better shape?' I don't want my insurance company to know my intensions because they may cop out. I'm hoping the doc wont even ask, but if he does I think I should just tell him that I simply generally want to be in better shape. Agree, disagree?...Ideas, suggestions?

No. Their actuaries might disagree, but I don't think it is any of their business.

Your goal is better health, it is none of their business why you want to be in better health. Would you feel obligated to tell them if the physical therapy was going to help you with a porno role? :P

I've always said there are 2 people in this world you should never lie too. Your doctor and your lawyer.

many of them (but not all) lie every day of their life :|:S

Yeah but you are paying each of them to look out for your interests. If you want your lawyer to tell the right lies to get you out of whatever mess your in you want him to be well informed. In order for your doctor to treat you correctly he also needs to be well informed.

No, I would not tell them and if you are ever injured and can get to the dr. on your own I would not tell them then either.

Right, and if they persist... just say you fell off your bike or out of a tree or off a ladder. :P And if you're wearing a skydiving t-shirt, change it to something else. ;)

You could tell your doctor, honestly, that you just want to be able to be more physically active and that you want to be able to do it without risking additional injury to yourself. That would be honest and I don't see a need to specify that "physically active" mean skydiving in particular. Besides, in reality, I suspect that this kind of physical therapy will be beneficial in many ways and not just for this sport.

The only reason you would have to lie to a doctor is if your insurance policy specifically states skydiving is not covered. Otherwise, it is simply an accident if you get hurt, and you are covered. I told my doctor what happened and ironically her husband was airborne military and she told me how he loved skydiving! Anyway, my xrays and doc visit was covered, no problem at all.

I don't know about that, but good luck! ;)

I kind of know what you mean, though. I've never been much interested in a regular workout routine, but if it helped in the wind tunnel, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I just need the proper motivation!

I am forced to have Medicare because no other insurance company will accept me. Ironically, it's not because of the high risk for cancer, but the Cerebral Palsy.....which does not get any worse over time (at least in my case). It limits me from practically nothing. Go figure that one out :S......

Some insurance companies won't pay for injuries as a result from skydiving.

Funny story though... My friend Mike broke his ankle in three places (yea, he knows he was a dumbass) from a landing. With the advice of others, he told the doctor he fell off a ladder. After treating him the doctor then made a comment that confused Mike and I. "I suggest you take up something safer... Like skydiving." As the doctor walked out the door, we noticed we both had on a skydiving shirt on... I don't think the doctor believed the story we gave him, but at least the insurance company paid for his injuries.

So.....will a regular insurance company drop you if they find out you're a skydiver? This makes me a little concernicus, I never though of that before. Hmmm....

As an insurance agent I can honestly tell you, yes- insurance companies can (but not always do) drop you if you negate the fact that you skydive. one of 2-3 things can happen: they'll keep you, but not pay a skydive related injury; they can pay the claim and drop you, or raise your premium

Read the small print on your insurance documents. My insurance does not cover for injuries caused by high risk sports... Skydiving is included in that as well as mountain climbing, rock climbing, racing, etc. I don't disclose to insurance companies I jump out of planes...

I haven't been hurt as a result of skydiving, but if I do (which I hope never happens) yes, I would lie... If I didn't have insurance, it wouldn't matter since I'd be responsible for my bills anyway. I pay for insurance and in my opinion, which doesn't mean shit, they should pay regardless of how an injury happened.

I have BCBS and never heard a single gripe out of them after I broke my leg. I had to have surgery to put in a Tibia Nail, 4 screws a plate and a few pins. I assume that was not cheap. They even had a Nurse call me once I was released from the hospital to offer any assistance I might need. I was very impressed with their service !!

He probably doesn't care, or he may think it's cool. His level of interaction with the insurance company amounts to practically nothing, and unless you think he is an ass, then he probably won't try to throw you under the bus...

I did the same thing. When I jumped my first couple jumps I was at 230LBS ~ eloy az. When I moved to Dallas, I learned my new DZ wont take me over 210. BASTARDS!!! :D

So cut to the rocky balboa scene with me eating right, running up the steps up the capital... Cut back..

I am at 214 now, and I will have to restart my AFF..

I do tell my doc, because if he is informed about what I do, if I come in with a sore neck or a hurt back then he will have a better idea of the stress involved. I know on every jump I have ever done I had a sore neck the next day.. Probably screwing something up, but it is good for the Doc to know how it happened, you know?

...therefore able to better treat me...

If I crack a bone in my neck or something on a hard opening, I won't just go in to the doc and say 'uh, I slipped in the bathroom' because he will not look at it with as much concern as 'my slider was screwed up and I went from 120mph to 10mph in about 1 second.'

I could never live with myself if I did have a minor fracture in my neck and then lied about it to my doctor and at some later point a minor bump caused me to be paralyzed or something stupid like that...
