[rant]I have had an employee who was extremely lazy/unproductive for some time but because of his skill set we had been putting up with him as with adequate supervision we were on balance better with him than without him. However economic times being what they are we decided 2 weeks ago to make him redundant - however we did need the 4 week notice to get sufficient handover of his work and a mop up being a small company. Anyhow today (Sunday) I get an email saying he's decided not to come in again without completing his contractual handover period.

Result - me having to do emergency rescheduling of my time while desperately trying to keep the business afloat.

Oh well he can kiss any reference good by now[/rant]

First mistake. Why would you want someone like that working for you at all? Any idea of the damage it does to the hardworking/productive employee?
Please don't dent the planet.
