Do people even look at or use ..

The navigation system in my car rendered the us of a map absolete. With GPS so prevalent on our iPhones, Blackberries, etc, I doubt people still use paper maps. Got to move forward :)

On my motorcycle, I have a map in the tank bag. My BB is in there too. At 90mph, i'd rather look at the map than the GPS on my BB.

One thing that many people don't even look at...

...is threads which don't specify the subject matter in the title.

Would it have been that much more trouble to add the word "maps" to the end of the sentence?

I guess you looked at this one! ;)

I use them all the time. GPS, Mapquest, etc. are great but nothing compares to a nice big roadmap spread out on the table or hood of a car to give you the big picture. Byt the time they shrink Texas down to fit on a Droid, you really can't see much detail between the major cities. When you enlarge to get the details, you lose the big picture. That is where roadmaps and an atlas will shine through.

A lot more people might have offered something here, but they didn't bother to look, because they didn't know what it was about.

But hey, it's your thread. If you want to limit input, that's okay with me.

If we put everything in the title then we would not be able to bitch about the search button not working right, now would we?.....:P

yes as primary and secondary nav aid a lot...two is one one is none

on the water: a watch(with hands no digital bullshit), compass, active radar/gps (laminated)charts transponder to sound depth

underwater: review all the charts sonar images info on location before, sonar/mesotech (with a competent operator on the radio) compass and a watch(with hands no digital bullshit preferably with a rotating bezel)

in the fuking weeds: a watch a compass laminated charts gps

driving: what the fuck ever... gasoline... a compass. if I go too far in any orientation I will hit water or the road will end turn and keep going i'll get there.. never lost everywhere is somewhere or, pull over and ask some clown where the fuck I'm at or gps

in the air: review all my aerial photos satellite imagery drawings or charts before hand check the spot with my eyes

a map or Atlas anymore?

Just seems like it is a dead source of data.

Yes quite frequently but not for driving, I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and let the GPS take me to where I am going (even if it is not the ideal route).

.......................................................................

My work vehicle has a really crude GPS installed. It frequently "loses" GPS signals between buildings, etc. so I always carry paper maps to get the "big picture."
