Abedy 0 #1 December 16, 2012 If you check with Google NGram, you'll see that by around 2004 the term "skydiving" is on the decline: clicky. Slightly, but... Does this reflect a real development or have media and book coverage gone down a little? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. JohnMitchell 14 #2 December 16, 2012 Wow, we sure didn't get much press back in the 1800's. I don't mind not being in the public eye so much. Maybe it's BASE Jumping that's stealing our thunder.
JohnMitchell 14 #3 December 16, 2012 Yep, I just checked it. Base jumping is on the rise.

Abedy 0 #8 December 16, 2012 Quote Thanks for the new toy here. You're welcome. Found it reading the latest AWADMail (look here), which contained a link to a study about the Evolution of English Words and Phrases Since 1520 (BTW: The article about how the Internet is changing the English language is also quite interesting.) Back to our sport: Skydiving has become much more popular than the mere term "skydive" within the last 20 years. BASE is still way behind, compared in absolute numbers. Look here. Other results: Bratwurst and Zeitgeist are on the rise, Weltschmerz is oscillating and slightly on its way down. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. Abedy 0 #25 December 17, 2012 The German counterpart "Fallschirmspringen" is slightly declining (clicky) though numbers of jumps (both "sports jumps" and "tandem jumps") have (slightly) increased.
