Hell, that is a bargain compared to what it originally cost:

In 2012, 23andMe raised $50 million in a Series D venture round, almost doubling its existing financing of $52.6 million. This enabled the company to further reduce the price of its product, which was originally priced at $999, from $299 to $99 in an effort to increase its customer base from 180,000 to one million.

Here's what 23andme found in my DNA.
My Mom and Sister have traced our Maternal side to Rosslyn Chapel and the Knights Templar. My Mother's Dad was a St. Clair and his family is from the Orkney's.
I guess that would be the 67.3% Nonspecific Northern European??

13.8% British and Irish
2,4% French and German
67.3% Nonspecific Northern European
1.1% Iberian
.6% nonspecific Southern European
14.4% nonspecific European
.1% Sub-Saharan African
.1% South Asian
.2% unassigned

It's a warning, not an legal injunction. 23andMe has 15 days to respond. If they don't respond, the FDA will probably take them to court to force them to stop.

After reading the letter, It seems to me that the FDA is telling 23andMe to quit marketing the device as having potential health benefits, not telling them to stop their testing service.

Interesting, in the old South this dude would have been a slave. Probably a house slave. In New Orleans, slave women who were only 1/8 black were known as Octaroons and were prized as "exotic" in the city's brothels. Where they had to whore as slaves.

I did a similar test from National Geographic. Different axes, but I came out to be a mix of Northern & Southern European along with Middle Eastern (all these are absolutely indicative of nearly everyone in northern Europe), along with 2% southeast Asian (!!!???!!!). Since the family tree goes only to Sweden for a few hundred years, that last is a little interesting.

I do show as being 2.7% Neanderthal, and 4% Denisovan

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I bought an Audible Great Courses "book" dealing with the historical Scandinavians who went a viking from the 8th century on until they Christianized and became less prone about the 12th century. Primarily they raided along the rivers of Eastern Europe down to the Caspian Sea as well as the Black Sea (and became the Rus) and raiding west along the west coast of Europe and the British Isles. They took many slaves in Eastern Europe and did a lot of trading with the Byzantine Empire. Since they traded in slaves from the east as well, it is probable that your ancestors probably brought back someone who was "interesting" that they got in trade in the markets of Constantinople. I am trying to figure out how I got some from the Caucasas and North Africa in my background in what is otherwise 99% British-Irish as well as from Normandy and a little Scandinavian.
