What to do with some money.

Recommended Posts

So, here's the thing: I need a new computer ( Vintage 08 and will not support the next update ), a new camera ( don't have one right now and need to make $ with one) and a new bike ( Current bike is vintage 98, and I ride ~3500/year). BUT, the last remaining bill from my divorce is $9200 ( and that's what's keeping me out of the sport this season). What would you do with $5500?

Holy crap!! 9200 from a divorce debt !!

Dang !!!

Sorry I forgot to vote: Buy the camera and pay off the debt. It seems like those are the two things you need to get back in the sport to make money. The other two you hopefully can get by with until you can save enough to get them replaced.

Can you split the difference and purchase the item you need that'll bring in some money and then apply the balance to the remaining divorce debt?

No. The camera is $4200, the bike is $4700 and the computer is $3800. I'm waiting to see if the camera and computer get upgraded this fall or next spring. The bike is the only thing I see as being stable in terms of price.

Whoa. Gotcha. Hmmmm...... I'm making my vote for the cash to go towards the remaining divorce settlement balance.

I think you'll get the most bang for your buck (especially if there is any interest involved) by paying off debt first.

There will also be the added benefit of helping to stop monthly reminders of pain you receive in the mail sooner.

I'm in agreement with Quade. Pay down the debt.

I'm debt free (mortgage & all vehicles paid, no CC or student debt) and have been for a few years.

It's nice knowing that I'm not beholden to anyone, that the only money I have to pay out is for what I spent last month (plus a few other odds & ends like taxes, insurance, ect)

I'm blessed to be able to be debt free and will stay that way!!

But I'll admit divorce debt? That has to be the worse!!
I guess I'm naive and think when your done your done.

Yeah, I'm kinda with you there, but what I really want is to pay the whole thing as opposed to a portion. Also, if I get the bike, I can cut way down on my driving and get by cheaper that way.

How much of a computer do you need?

Apple iMac. Fully tricked out for video and still photography ( Final Cut X, Aperture, Photoshop.)

. Buy the camera you want at a pawn shop, after trying it out first.

Not an option, 5D mk 4 isn't out yet.

I'm not sure about the bike, but you might try Craigslist for that.

Been there, done that. Nothing worth the trouble.

It's even worse than you might think. Everyone has their hand out. Lawyer wants $X, Courts want $X, Bank wants $X, Title company wants $X, Settlement company wants $X. I should have gave her the house and got a trailer at Z-hills.:P

Not sure how your $9200 debt equates to $5500 in your pocket?

Been saving to pay one big lump sum in stead of marginally higher payments.

Awwww.... some days I'm of the same mindset and other days I miss everything about being married. Oh well.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

My answer depends on how much money you have in savings. How many months can you last without going into more debt if you lost your job?
