  1. IME it's been a question of proportion and control. I've jumped with a few people in ws with around 150 jumps. There was one thing that I saw among some of the low timers that made me think--zooming about the sky. I didn't feel comfortable approaching one guy to give him feedback--I think he thought he was fine tuning, but in real life he was making huge body changes that pushed him from side with a good deal of force. I somewhat held back to avoid a car wreck at 9000'. In the grand scheme of things I don't think there's all that much feedback I could have given him in the air that I couldn't on the ground, other than PULL NOW and that wasn't an issue -- with 150 jumps you should already have a good enough sense of that not to get yourself killed, imo. But still it makes me somewhat leery of jumping with him until he gets a handle on it. Anyway, one of the things I think you get from experience is a better grasp of proportionality of effect, nobody having > 200 jumps that I've jumped with has zoomed around like that except on purpose and in a relatively controlled manner. 3. on the side of the monitor near the back. underneath the chin of the monitor bottom of the seat inside a drawer I used to walk through the office after everybody left and just take the stickies away and erase the whiteboards. clean desk policy and all that. 4. I think after food they should start regulating exercise. Maybe put a little tv in every house with a webcam on it so they can wake us up in the morning with an exercise program and check up on us make sure we are healthy and doing our jumping jacks. 5. Pretty much since day one, he's been trying, at least. This is the kind of fellow our founding fathers warned us about. Running from congressional subpoenas One out of ten ain't bad! Which is not to say that the budget looks good, but we can't pin that entirely on him. Terrsts. or is it tourists? OK, that's 2 out of 10. Lets see...clamping down on public statements, vindictiveness, insists on loyalty and punishes independent thought... There aren't many topical articles that don't. DHS comes to mind. Pentagon's TIA and related data driftnets at the FBI, CIA, etc. I am the decider. Let's see...pretty much the whole Iraq thing. Secret trials, avoiding the criminal justice system for accused international criminals, etc. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 6. Then you've contracted the plague of safety fads endemic in this sport. No worries, the infection may clear up on its own in a few years. Some people develop a chronic case. I think an elementary course in probability theory should be a prerequisite to be an S&TA, or a RD. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 8. Your posts are a beacon of rationality in this thread, I'm finding hard not to agree point by point. It is pointless imo to legislate in response to streaks of incidents. Any worthwhile legislation stands on its own, and does not need a string of incidents to justify it. I start to wonder when a series of incidents is used for any legislative process whether the rules created in reaction may well be irrelevant in a years' time when probability has given us a new series of incidents to legislate. 9. Hey be nice. Dredging up the old BJ tantrum is his way of saying he can't think of any way to debate the original topic. Rule #1 of negotiations, always leave an easy out for your opponent. 11. Porn has been on the leading edge since early on tho, incl ascii art :). Pushing porn off port 80 dodges the point tho, I suspect much of non-porn content would follow it. Porn being such an ambiguous concept when you get down to it, content providers will follow the path of least resistance and head to the least regulated quarters, at least I wouldn't be surprised if this were to happen in response. Diluting the value of the label. Hell, maybe we /should/ pursue this fruitlessly a few times so it gets drilled into people's heads. Porn here != porn there. s/porn/obscenity/g; s/obscenity/offensive/g; s/offensive/objectionable/g; s/objectionable/adult/g; etc My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 12. Gives a new perspective on the role of the bonfire: group therapy and self medication, seems to work well
  13. That can mean only one thing. The Dems have WMDs! My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  14. I was reading an article about PTSD tonight, and I started to wonder if skydiving is a cause of traumatic stress. Any psychiatrists, amateur or pro, care to share a word? Can being part of an incident, narrowly avoiding one, or witnessing one damage your mind? Has it? (in seriousness and besides the effect that drains your bank account and ruins your marriage) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTSD My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 15. Some gov'ts try. The internet is ruled by a set of quasi governmental entities that could in principle be nationalized; the US has resisted plans to spin them off to the UN. China is currently spending gobs of money vainly trying to keep a lid on online dissent via monitoring and filtering. In the western world we seem more keen on regulating the consequences of the internet more than the means, and clobbering the means only when it's inextricably linked to the consequences (cf napster, non-infringing use, etc). 16. Yes, it's written in the Constitution that gold never loses value. Or was it in the Bible. Hell, everybody knows that gold never loses value, it's in textbooks everywhere. Right? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  17. I thought this was common knowledge? They take your money and impound it until you an prove it is not used for illicit purposes. Maybe I'm thinking of the federal level, transporting cash between states and across borders. But ISTR reading a few cases over the last few years of cash being seized more or less out of the back of someone's car on the premise that there's no legitimate purpose to having that much money. example: http://www.kentucky.gov/Newsroom/justice/pr1121b.htm My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 18. We already have it, and it doesn't cause that much chaos. Coke points, Marlboro points or whatever they were called, WoW Gold, air miles, hotel points and so on . Basically any transferable or semi-transferable quantity / entity that can be exchanged for goods, and which doesn't have too much intrinsic value amounts to a currency. 19. Optical media sounds more promising to me. Blu ray, HD DVD, DVD, CD to us ordinary folk. I've worked for banks where most / all the important data was put on optical media in addition to backup tapes. Others replicate literally to the other sides of the planet. Archival is a serious business, it is not safe to assume that others are not on top of it because it may be fresh to you. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 20. Indeed. Try paying for a car or a house with cash. Many localities have even criminalized carrying large amounts of cash, and show no signs of indexing for inflation. They might true up every now and then but long term I think the writing is on the wall. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

  22. Somewhere recently I heard someone suggest that legislators should be fined every time a bill they voted for is overturned on constitutional grounds. Was it on this forum? I'm starting to think it's a really good idea. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

  24. We should not waste our money on unattainable goals. You are clinging to a fantasy, and it is destructive to pursue it heedless. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  25. Acceptable is an interpretation. The economics of the situation is incontrovertible. For all the money we have in the US, we do not have enough to achieve European standards of healthcare. To vainly pursue such is to invite economic ruin, and fail at the same time. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
