because people aggressively trying/wanting to downsize generally get bored of their canopy WAY before they really know how to fly it, or more importantly LAND it in shitty conditions. Spouting off BillV's list can give the receptive listener things to think about and work on, things to perhaps make the canopy 'interesting' again if they really care about being able to fly as well as they thought they did. The problem is that people get bored with how quickly their canopy turns and how long it dives and how fast it comes in on landing, all the things that ARE NOT IMPORTANT TO LANDING YOU SAFELY. Yet people are making canopy downsizing decisions based on how fast the canopy feels instead of their likelihood of being able to land it safely in conditions that are less than ideal. this is true... but i've seen/heard of some instructors making some downright bad recommendations. My advice would be to go with the more experienced of the instructors.. they've generally seen more blood, lost a few more friends and have a little more perspective. yes... and that includes listening to the little voice WAY in the back of you head that says "this may is a bad idea" Perple are getting broken, maimed, paralyzed and KILLED under good working parachutes that they're not ready for... which part of that do you want me to add levity to? perhaps some of them are "listening to themselves", hearing "yeah, you're ready, go for it!" and come here to be talked down from it.... somewhere inside they know that they should probably wait, but the adrenaline junky is getting the better of them and they're hoping they'll find some cooler heads here. Actually the Warlock is a single-canopy container. I think you're thinking of the Sorcerer system developed years back by (i think) Marta. It's a 2 canopy container with a direct-bag reserve system with the same idea (though different execution) as the new Skyhook system from Relative Workshop. The video in question can be found HERE. The beginning is different, but the actual sequence is the best quality version of this jump that i've seen. blue skies. right there with ya..... my fist canopy off student status was a cloud lite (230 7cell, DOM 1980 (shame.. as my student canopy was a sabre 170, but i digress)) that routinely smacked the hell out of me EXCEPT when i flat-packed it blind drunk in my college house in a room not wide enough to lay it out completely and not very well lit besides.... those were always really nice openings... *shrug* -jerm *DISCLAIMER* you probably shouldn't pack drunk, and if you do, make sure you remember your emergency procedures!! Exactly!! Some people seem to learn canopy flying a lot quicker than others. I'm one of the "slow" people. the problem comes in that MOST people think they're one of the fast people... they think they're ahead of the curve and can therefore be more aggressive with their downsizing.... In your case, sunshine, to be completely sexist, women tend to be smarter than men when when it comes to matters of pride, testosterone and machismo, especially when it comes to safety concerns. They also seem to be more aware and accepting of their personal limitations than men are. YMMV Just remember, now matter how far ahead fo the curve you think you are, and whatever numbers game you don't want to subscribe to, there is a SKILL SET that you should also be able to met on this canopy before downsizing, not just that the landings are still fun. Even the prodigies should be able to meet billV's now-famous-list of skills to progress. Sun-Tzu's teachings stand up in practice , the constitution is a good idea that was flawed and allows for corrections. We don't scientifically understand raikki and accupuncture yet either, but there's empirical evidence of their benefit and we're allowed to ask the questions and study them critically. Religion is the only area of "learning" (I use use the term loosely this case) where it is not only frowned upon to ask the tough questions or display different views, but it'll get you shot instead of laughed at if you do it in the wrong circles. It's the only area where "it works in mysterious ways" is accepted as a trump card anytime its assertions and arguments are shown to not hold water in one way or another. Sure, the bible was a good story, it had sex and violence and betrayal and revenge and destruction and all the stuff the movie-going audience appreciates (including some great special effects -- did you see the scene where that Moses character spread the read sea wide open? way-cool, or the fire & lightning that destroyed those cities? wicked!), and it even has some good lessons and things we can learn from. It's ludicrous, however, to summarily accept it as the word and law of "god" after all of the the transcriptions, revisions, translations and general manipulation by whomever happened to be in charge at the time. The thing was written as a parable to teach basic morality to people of ancient times in the language of ancient times and did a good job of it. They said it was the word of god so people would buy into it and it worked. One hell of a sales-pitch, too... Apparently they bought the it hook, line, sinker and whole-frikkin-boat because 2000 years later people are STILL buying into the sales-guy's promises. PT Barnum must have been descended from these guys, seriously, cause the only people you can go to to definitively speak to the product's effectiveness are DEAD.... it's brilliant!!
