  19. Clint, The reply that you can only lower the aircraft, not raise the wheels, was a "tongue in cheek" reply stating what is not really obvious, that is, if a "retraction" sequence is initiated the aircraft will go down onto the wheels, the wheels cannot come "up" into the aircraft as that would leave the aircraft sitting in the air with no support. As for the original question about the 737, I have a type rating in the 737 with over 1,000 hours in the aircraft. There are safety interlocks that prevent a retraction sequence from being initiated while at least one landing gear strut is compressed. This interolock can be overridden but I doubt that on a 737 the aircraft would "lower" even if overridden as the main gear "retracts" inboard and due to the geometry of the main gear double wheeel it would actually have to "raise" the aircraft to get into the wheelwells. I doubt that a 737 ever lowered itself onto its gear on the ground. As for other aircraft, the systems vary so much that it is hard to generalize other to say that some safety interlock would have to fail or be overidden to create that scenario. Mike Mullins
  20. QuoteCan the landing gear be put up while the plane is still on the ground? My professor said this happened with a 737 due to miss communication between the pilot and co-pilot. Everyone that has answered this question "can the landing gear be put up while the plane is still on the ground" in the affirmative is absolutely wrong. There is no aircraft that the landing gear can be "put up" while it is on the ground. You can lower the aircraft but you can't make the wheels come up. Mike Mullins
  21. If you are getting blown off the side or having difficulty exiting that King Air, then that King Air is not slowing down and/or does not have the engine at idle. Propblast is from the prop-- if the engine is at idle and not producing any significant amount of thrust then there will be no propblast. Slipstream wind is from airspeed and is simply a function of how fast you are going. The exit speed on my King Air is 80 kts, there is no prop blast, and the only wind you will feel is 80 kts. 80 kts is the speed specified for competition and that is what the Otters are doing on exit. My 75 lb 11 year old had no trouble front floating nor has anyone ever complained about the wind blast or exit speed on my King Air. By the way, that other King Air is simply not faster. If the aircraft is flown properly there is no more wind or blast than any other jump aircraft and it is no more difficult to exit than any other ( yes, I know the door is smaller). Mike Mullins
  22. Taft now has a bunkhouse located right next to the brand new showers. Bunkhouse is heated, just bring your sleeping bag and air mattress or pad. Showers (4) are first class and have lots of hot water. The bunkhouse is "free" but the City of Taft charges a tax of $1.00 per person per night, so that is what you pay. Mike Mullins
  23. Freefly Winter Weekend with Guano Freefly. Come out to Taft and get on some freefly loads with Northern California freefly team, Guano! Guano, based out of SkyDance Skydiving in Davis California, has competed and organized internationally for the past 4 years. They will be here for freefly load organizing and coaching January 24th and 25th. And, with Mullins' King Air taking you to 14,000 feet for only 14 bucks, you can make a ton of good jumps including VRW jumps, flocks, tracks, hybrids, and more! The time is right, the price is right, and the place is right—come out and join us! Skydive Taft 661-765-JUMP http://www.skydivetaft.com
  24. With all due respect to Winsor (a friend and a very smart guy), I have not changed my position on this subject. Sorry, it is ground speed that determines the spacing that jumpers must be given. Other contributing factors, such as varying windspeed with altitude and jumpers turning a particular direction under canopy, must also be accounted for but the underlying basis for the spacing is ground speed. As many have argued ad nauseum over this question, I do not wish to open any more debate so this is all I will say on the subject. I will just continue to safely space the jumpers from my aircraft and put them on the target to the best of my ability. Mike Mullins
  25. We will have a lighted DZ with mobile oilfield lighting. Entire landing area will be well lit.
