  1. Glad you think that, Dave. Otherwise you might be looking for a job. Especially after the TCC. I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  2. Not so sure about you being older than me. I also would have loved to have been in bed anywhere close to midnight. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  3. Well since we had more than a dozen people to cook for and I was probably under a little more stress, not to mention 10 years on Pablo.... NO I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  4. Queen Bee says, sure someone can cook breakfast every morning. I would cook if I wasn't staying up so late and at the DZ by 8 in the morning. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

  15. It is Tuesday, but I am still tired. I mostly took yesterday off. Today I have to go play with numbers and pay for fuel. (It is also payroll week) I just wanted to thank everyone for making Summer Jam a great event. We have received many thanks, but Kathy and I did not make the event. You guys did. Everyone that came out despite the summer heat to our small 182 DZ to meet new friends and visit old ones. You guys made it rock. Thanks. I especially want to thank Goat for coaching me on my sit (I have a new thing to practice now) and everyone involved in the vSCR. Cool, I finally have a low number in something. We enjoyed hosting the event and look forward to the next one. We are gearing up for the 4th Annual AOTMB in September. It is not likely, but if I find some grants, loans, or banks to rob, then we may have more facilities by then. Again, don't hold your breath. (We want showers too Levin) Thanks again, and hope to see everyone again soon. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  16. Sorry for the delay. Braked approach meaning, sinking in on brakes but then allowing the canopy to fly prior to landing. We of course went over the consequences of holding it too long. I agree an accuracy landing is not advised. Size - Dave shouldn't be crossing 200# by much before being over factory limits at his current weight. He is 6'1" an a big country boy. Just clarifying. He did find your post informative. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  17. I learned of this loss Sunday morning, but it still hasn't completely set in. I met Roger in 99 at my AFF cert course at SDC. Rook was in the course as well. I, like many, haven't had many signatures in my book since my D. I do have Roger's thuogh. His powerful and possitive personality amazes me still. On May 5, 1999 on my second AFF eval dive in which he was the evaluator, I aske for his signature. He happily signed it, Roger Nelson FB#2. I had wonderful opportunies to speak with Roger and learn from his insight. I also spent a lot of time with Rook. They both are great individuals that never came across that way. They have alsways seemed confident, yet humble. I have since spoke with Roger over the phone, via email, and in person and he has always been helpful and inspirational. He has given me great advice and one of the influences in becoming a DZO. Thanks Roger and STL. To the families (skydiving and others), peace be with you, let his inpirations live on. 18. John, Very nice post. I am the TCD for Dave. He is doing very well. Still learning the approaches and the canopy flight, but making some nice landings on a no wind day. I agree with the braked approach point you made. He sees me use this many times, but still has some practice for how high you have to start them to make it an effective skill for sinking. Especially sinking enough to compensate for the added "swoop" it will yeild. As you say, he will have to set his own personal limits, but he has experienced a non-cooperative stundent (myself) at close to the system limits. He shouldn't have a size issue. He is a big dude. For someone to be bigger than him, they would most likely be over the weight limits. I know many instructors have exceeded the manufacturer's limitations, but the thing to remember is not only could that cost a lawsuit and licensce revocation, but you don't know how many times in the past that rig has had the limits exceed or by how much. The next time could be catastrophic failure. Overall, I think Dave will be an excellent Tandem Instructor. I have seen him come a long way in the past year. He has worked with many students and is professional, conservative, and very safety minded with them. Thanks for contibuting. I think your post will help Dave. I also foung the post useful. Blue Skies, Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  19. I don't personally. On a tandem I am not worried about getting back going further into the wind. I can pull high if need be to make it back. I have seen Instructors take a second pass and get out right over the other jumps. Granted they are much lower by then, but out of a 182 I just can't justify a go around for those issues. Obviously, there are other reasons for a possible go around. Most of the time I have a vidiot with me so I try to keep in mind how far out we are and I make sure they know if I pull high, they may want to as well. I also will signal them sometimes. Just make sure they know what signal you are giving and what it means. I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  20. As we teach in the course, tandems and low passes are a bad combination. There is an interesting incident we cite in the course. Most jumpers go out before the tandem unless they are doing crew or if I am allowing them to lurk. And no, I don't let just anyone lurk. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  21. Mike, TI, student, Camera, 1 slot free Camera next to pilot, student behind pilot, TI in back facing camera, or next to student if there is a W&B issue. Same with 1 fun jumper - jumper next to pilot, camera next to student, TI in back. TI, student - try to avoid by get a jumper or 2 (I am DZO and only a money issue), but when it happens, I have student next to pilot. Some people like to have the TI next to pilot and I have seen bigger guys then me do it (Eric Butts), but I don't like it. In a narrow body, the rig doesn't really fit there and it interfere with the pilots operation of control (mixture, throttle, reading gauges, etc.). The only thing to be aware of is in an emergency, you have to hook one attachment up facing them, roll them onto their knees open door an go with your foot on the step. I would recommend practicing this on the ground if you use this. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
  22. I basically do slotperfect's method with one difference. After hookup, I lean back and let them get their feet out from under them. I can them move them easily and all they have to do is keep their feet in front of them. For the exit, I have them place both feet on the step and I am on my knees in the plane. I generally do a flip out of the plane first timers and I rotate on exit to fly the relative wind. I also teach (Examiner for RWS) the right leg of you and the student out on the step. The only trick to this is to not tighten up and lean back too soon or you may find you legs getting a bit uncomfortable. I will generally have everything hooked and tightened except the lower connectors and talk them through the dive again. About a minute prior, I tighten the lowers and let them get their legs in front. Hope this helps. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

  25. As a Tandem Examiner, Relative Workshop recommended I train candidates to walk off a tailgate. It gives you a natural backflip into a great belly to earth position. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.
