  1. Allright, my gf's 2 year old laptop is in dire need of some help. It is running VERY slowly. I ran disk cleanup on it first and deleted more than 2G of files. Then I ran Disk Defragmenter a few times. Look at the pictures to see before and after the two processes. Now, will it help to keep running Disk Defragmenter a 100 times? It changes so little every time I run it now that I think this would be neglegable. The computer now runs faster, but is still pretty ridiculously slow. The battery is also non-existent - rans for 5 minutes before it can't anymore. Thanks! --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

This might be a stupid idea, but not being constrained by the limits of understanding, knowledge or any experience, Why don't you BASE off the cliff with the rope hooked in (such as the example in the video) and then cuttaway? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  4. I don't pay attention to charts much, but I think that the Brittish charts, and even French charts are of much better quality than US charts. Quality: Brittney Spear is NOT quality. Neither is M&M and half of the other rap/pop stars. These people are simply promoted, and America buys. Record lables are to blame. Is this the situation in Brittain? France? Or is big music business less prevalent in the "selection" of what is popular? Sharing: Take Allofmp3.com as an example. Why not see what is downloaded the most, and make that the most popular. (Sure, it's affected, but imagine a perfect system with no outside influence from TV/Movies/posters). You buy something you like, and like amazon it tells you: users who downloaded x also downloaded y, a, b, c etc. just a thought... --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  5. Agreed. Pretty agrivating. Screw the guy in the bowtie and all his opponents as well. Care about something that matters please. Now, Colbert - that's a different story. Better than the Economist and the WSJ combined! Just quit reading, and it will all be sorted out. Books are for dummies. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  6. Tyranny: - arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power - oppressive or unjustly severe government on the part of any ruler. - undue severity or harshness. Is the US all that far removed from a tyranny? What are you gonna do? they got 99 cops and you got a pistol. Then they detain you, put you in prison for being some kind of terrorist threat, and you are never heard from again. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  7. agreed- it does to some extent. Open the first two pages and it will brief on the facts - read the articles and filter through the bias - although it is solid arguments based on solid facts, not useless rhetoric by some TV personality millionaire. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  8. Having been here for 5 years to watch the political mayem Americans refer to call "democracy", I don't understand why they love their media so much. With everyone out there piping their opinion, you know they are most likely wrong or biased. WHy not take a look at the damn facts for yourself and decide for yourself. I don't have time to sit in front of the telly and be told what to think by some political argument. I read: news.bbc.co.uk, WSJ, and The Economist - plenty enough to tell me the facts and let me decide for myself. I don't have time for American TV/Media BS. A bunch of crap if you ask me. Annoys the shit out of me. I also watch the occasional political documentary, but always take it with several grains of salt, no matter what. i'm done...please explain now... --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

  10. That’s a copy of an E-mail I just wroth to everyone on my E-mail list. We have a brain dead president who is supported by the brain dead and mislead. He has single handedly changed what this country has stood for. Not only did we kill thousands of inocent people and invade a country on lies; he has also damaged the country in a way no terrorist ever could. He has disrespected all the troops that have ever died and fought for this country. He is destroying America. BRAIN DEAD? Not at ALL...Although he may not be the most intelligent President we have ever seen, he certainly isn't stupid. Although the Pres. is one person, it would be the minority of cases where he completely oposes his advisors. It is my understanding that there are political powers fueled by political theories/theorists who have far greater ideas in their heads than 99.99% of the U.S. - including you and I - can practically understand, much less see from day to day. Bush and his people behind the scenes are simply opening the road for themselves for now and the future, preparing the way for those to come. I doubt that Bush could solely derive that much benefit from this action that he would be in favor of it for that reason alone. Anyways, although I would like to express all the bullcrap I believe, i gotta study some damn cobb-douglas microeconomics now... THANKS FOR THE LINK
  11. So, what is the use of holding on to your guns that the constitution protects in order to let you fight the government (1st amendment?) when you can so easily be declared an enemy combatant. I'm not a political scientist, and I struggle to understand a lot of US politics, but this does not make sense to me. It seems like capitalism is becoming more and more like 1984? Politicians like power and want more, war opens power growth opportunities = politicians like war and the government grows? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  12. Google: "French military victories" - Hit "I'M FEELING LUCKY". (if you haven't already heard of this). I have recently read a very interesting book - "Why sixty million frenchmen can't be wrong" that point out a LOT of cultural differences, quite humorous most of the time, A FRENCH HALLOWEEN: On Halloween of 1999, sitting in a cafe overlooking the port of Honfleur, in Normandy, we had this thought as we watched a bizarre exercise of cultural cross-fertilization unfold before our eyes. Halloween is only a few years old in France. It's not an easy custom to adapt, partly because French urban structures don't lend themselves well to trick or treating. Kids would have to know the four-number "digicode" of many buildings just to get through the door to ring doorbells, and there aren't many front porches for people to decorate. in Honfleur, local authorities found a way to surmount these logistical obstacles. They organized a Halloween parade so local children could trick or treat "en masse" in the cafes and shops along the port. People, of course, draw on the models they already have - Halloween in Honfleur looked and sounded more like a labor strike than the traditional children's ritual we were accustomed to. The Honfleur children marched in a crowd between police cruisers, their little fists raised, chanting, "We want candies! We want candies!" And what did they do as they proceeded along the port? They actually stormed all the restaurants and boutiques in their path ordering merchants to hand over the goods. We were stunned to see this hostile pack of rampaging ghosts and ghouls, but even more surprised to see the grown-up French going along with it! AMERICA IF IT WAS FRANCE: It occurred to us that the French were really the Aborigines of France. The ancestors of France go back several ice ages. They are not people who, like NORTH AMERICANS, arrived in the midst of a primitive culture, erased it, and started over. They have always been there. In AMERICA, the parallel would be something like this: The Indians won, not the cowboys. and the Aztecs went on to create a country that sent rockets into orbit and delivered the mail twice a day, but still celebrated human sacrifice on the stairs of pyramids. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

  18. My Finance professor gave us this one to solve over the weekend for extra credit: You have a friend who likes to play roulette. He bets a $1 on 13 EVERY TIME he plays. (When he wins, he gets $35 + his original investment, which is $1. $35+1= $36 total.) You want to discourage him from playing, so you offer him a deal. You say: If you play 36 times in a row and you break even or come out ahead, I will give you $20. However, if you play 36 times in a row and have less than break-even, then you owe me $20. Is this a good way to discourage your friend from playing the Roulette wheel? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

  21. College is ending soon, and there are a lot of elements that are important to me in making a decision where to move. More generally however (not advice for me, since only I can possibly value things the way I do), Where do you want to live? How about Salt Lake City (SOME jobs that would appeal to me) 50' snow in the city 500 only a few miles away... Utah itself offers, and you are located in the middle of a bunch of states that offer: - GREAT Skiing - Skydiving - Climbing - Cycling/Biking (and municycling ) - BASE - Gliding - And it's damn beautiful... Where is better? Europe? Africa? Mongolia? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  22. Thanks, you just made my boss realize i'm not doing work... For the others - this wasn't intended as a competition, simply a good laugh. No doubt all these things take skills, some more some less. No doubt all these things take balls, some more some less. In Kris's case preferably none. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  23. without having read the entire thread, I quote George Carlin: It's the old American double standard, you know say one thing and do something different. And of course the country is founded on the double standard, that's our history, we were founded on a very basic double standard. This country was founded by slave owners who wanted to be free. Am I right? A group of slave owners who wanted to be free. So they killed a lot of white English people, in order to continue owning their black African people, so they could wipe out the rest of the red Indian people, and move west and steal the rest of the land from the brown Mexican people, giving them a place to take off and drop their nuclear weapons on the yellow Japanese people. You know what the motto of this country ought to be? You give us a color, we'll wipe it out! --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIUCTbi_XZs&mode=related&search= a good way to start understanding how massive our world it and how fortunate we are. After coming to the US: without resorting to politics - my biggest wish for americans is that they had some means of real comparison in their daily lives that makes them understand how incredibly good they have it. Sincere Apreciation and Gratefulness. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
