  1. Slim chance, but anyone know someone who works at Vail Resorts by chance? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  2. by the way, if you haven't read this book, it's worth reading. Quick read and numerous little wisdoms http://www.vagabonding.net/ --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  3. If a bunch of people with a similar view of risk/reward (and a lot more experience than I) all have such a similar opinion, it makes it fairly clear. Not exactly what I want at this point, but I am fortunate to have the options I do. I'll put more emphasis in my evaluation on taking advantage of them while I have the chance. We'll see how things turn out, and which job I take, but this thread provided a healthy (and needed) dose of reality to not risk too much. Thanks all. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  4. The model changes significantly when you consider "net benefit flows" instead of "free cash flows". If our model contained only hard-cash-money, and thats all that mattered in life, it would be a clear and easy decision. I have put in tremendous effort throughout college (3 degrees and a part time junior analyst position in 4 yrs) and over the last few years into this job. I made significant sacrifices in terms of friendships (relocated several times) and what I want to be doing on the weekends (worked many of them). I did this to get myself on a solid footing with strong experience. I feel like I have achieved my goal. I currently live in the northeast, and I am looking every day to move west closer to my family, the mountains, and the quality of life. It was when i mentioned this to a friend that she said - why don't you take your time, drive out there and take time off, go paraglide for a few weeks? Looking for a job from the place where you want to be would be significantly easier. This said, you all provide good perspective on not taking too much risk without a job offer. On the other hand I want to move closer to the type of finance work that I would like to be doing, for a company that I would like to work for, with a healthy work-life balance, and closer to the location where I have family, good friends, and plenty of fun things to do close by. The economy is getting better, and the longer I wait (yes, it's a gamble, but it may pay off) the more jobs there will be out there. Thus my pondering on time off...i may not, depending on what comes along, but if I don't receive and offer for a job I like (more important to me than the pay), then I'm considering relying on my savings, having a good time while moving west and setting up shop there. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  5. Since I always come here for some good advice... I'm at the end of a 2yr, post undergrad corporate finance program, which is pretty intense and has required a lot of devotion. I am in a good competitive spot now, receiving external offers at $20K more than my current, and at what they cap me at internally. IMO, this is a good opportunity to make a clean break, and take some time off. How would it look to a future employer if I take a break at this point for a couple of months? A friend argues it would make no difference. How about making the break more sustainable with working a part time job on the side (which I won't list on my professional corporate finance resume). Maximum time off, 6 months. Also, what about taking a job at that $20K more, working a few months or a year, and then taking a break? Getting that bump into my history can only help, right? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

    SLC

Currently I'm just north of NYC, and with a good number of well paying options here, I'm pretty set on heading west and getting my glider back out of the bag more regularly. I have job opportunities that are roughly similar in both Scottsdale AZ and SLC, which is better in terms if social life for a twenty-something, and considering the other factors mentioned above? Im thinking SLC for better skiing, more convenient gliding at POTM and the closer proximity to the bridge. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

    SLC

Thanks, wish I had as many jumps as you. This is reassuring. I have some other options that are a better moves career-wise so we will see how it turns out. I would love to start working a little less and playing a little more. Utah seems like the right place to do that. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

    SLC

Would love some input from those who know. I have a job opportunity in SLC. The job isn't quite what I would like to be doing but pays decent, especially by Utah cost of living standards. A friend recently visited SLC and told me not to move there, I would die of boredom and the narrowmindedness. Problem is that she is a bit narrowminded herself. I love to paraglide, ski, skydive and want to get into jumping off of things too at some point. As a mid twenties single, would Salt Lake City be that terrible? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  9. Love it. If they make something that will fit in my pocket... --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  10. I finally decided to get an iPhone. I've been recommended to get an Otterbox Defender as it is "bombproof". I think it prevents you from slipping the sleek phone in your pocket, and costs too much, but does offer the benefit of less worries. Maybe one of their slightly less clunky covers is a suitable idea. What do you use to protect it, and have you had problems? note: I bought Applecare. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!

  12. So... I know how to insert Excel tables and graphs into powerpoint so that it's linked for changes to the .xls, but how about this one: Can I have a label (i.e. a textbox) in .ppt, and somehow have the number update if I change it in the Excel file? I am sent numbers from various people every week, and need to make a bunch of graphs every week. This. gets. very. tedious. (Fortunately someone else in India does the work, i'm just trying to save them time). --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  13. Refurb will save me $50 - is this a risk worth taking? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  14. Good opinions, i'll keep looking. Thanks. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  15. So, I sent in an application for a job I believe I am well qualified for. When I didn't hear back in a couple of weeks (but still saw the job posted), I found the manager's name and gave him a call, leaving a message: I would like to introduce myself, see where they are in the recruiting process, and mentioned that I am very enthusiastic about the position (I am). This is at a small I-bank, where persistence & hard work is valued. Now, I have read that persistence have worked for some people, but how often should I call back - I just called again, and no answer, again. If it's lost, it's lost, and I can't really mess it up. But I don't want to ruin it if there's a still a chance. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  16. Something I try to remind myself of, is that we often have little idea of what other people are dealing with that day. We have no idea what is going on in their lives & heads. Most of the time I just let things like this slide, there are more important things to think about (I hope). --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  17. So my old Go-Phone with 2 yr contract expired last Nov., and i'm looking to upgrade. Should I buy the $99 3G, the $199 3GS (16GB), the $299 3GS (32MB), or should I wait for the 4G (this summer?), see how it compares, and if I don't like it then buy what will then be a cheaper 3GS? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  18. Right now i'm in southern Connecticut, skiing VT mostly. Not very often either this season. Likely I will be moving to Denver or SLC this summer --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  19. Work authorization - how easy is it for a foreigner to come in and take a job from a local. Usually they have preferable terms for locals, esp. Switzerland from what I have heard. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  20. Some great replies. This is the reason that when I want a good answer to my questions, i ask it here. I took my nicer skis to the shop and paid 'em well to do a good all round tune up. I'll get a small bench & vices (need one for other reasons anyways) and do some work on my crappy skis which I bought very very cheap, and then wrecked in a bad conditions at chamonix. maybe this'll teach me to take care of my stuff better. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  21. I bought skis last season and have not waxed them. They're not in good shape. I bought a small kit to do this, I want to learn how to do it myself, but don't have a vice. The local shop does a machine wax for $30. I'd rather hand wax them myself. The filing should be easy. Is it hard to learn to wax your own skis correctly? Should I just give 'em to the shop, or try to learn? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  22. - Finance jobs - Check - Skydive - Check - Paraglide - Check - Check - Cool place/Cool people - Check Geneva And expensive, right? I spent some time living in Grenoble and REALLY want to find a way to live in France again. Is it difficult to get authorization for France? Switzerland? --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  23. Vacation days... another good argument. http://money.cnn.com/2007/06/12/pf/vacation_days_worldwide/ --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  24. More and more we are seeing car manufacturers using mpg as a selling point, usually stated well above the actual mpg I've been getting in mine, and I'm sure most people get in theirs. How is this regulated, and how come there's such a big difference between 35mpg and the 24 I get? While we're on the topic - what's the best mpg you ever got? (Mine was driving down to key-west & back, 50mph for a few hours of flat driving - 30.5mpg in an accord.) --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
  25. I clicked through the findyourspot survey, and it came up with places scattered through Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Montana. Now that IS a place i'd like to check out..."the world is full of bastards, the number increasing rapidly the further one gets from Missoula Montana". Strangely enough it did not recommend anything in CA. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
