  8. Here's what I tell people that ask me about RSLs. Yes, there are certain situations that an RSL could be a detriment. How often are you planning on being in those situations? If that is going to be normal for you, then an RSL is not a safety device that you should employ. But if those situations are few and far between and in most situations that you will find yourself in an RSL would possibly save your life, why not have it? It sounds like the situation that you were in could have been prevented by 1) not participating in the jump, 2) having a better plan for where people's hands were during the jump. I am taking it that your profile is correct. So at 156 jumps, do you have the confidence to be able to cutaway and activate your reserve if you are involved in a canopy collision at or below 1000 feet? This is not meant to be mean, it is just something that I ask people. Some people say that they only feel comfortable doing it with a safety device, i.e. RSL or Skyhook. So please consider what will be the most likely situations that you will be in at this time in your skydiving career. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.

  10. Here is my take on packers, and yes, I do pack mains for cash as well: I know and appreciate the fact that packers perform a valuable service in the sport. This is what I don't like. People that learn to pack, just to get their A license, and then pay a packer from then on. If they don't have any REAL knowledge on how to pack, what happens when a day comes when there are no packers. Or a packer packs a bad opening or something that just doesn't feel right. Is that jumper going to know what was done incorrectly, and are they going to know what suggestions to make to correct the problem? More than likely not. They are at the mercy of the packer's knowledge and abilities. So just because you use a packer, which I also do on occasion, does not necessarily mean that you are lazy. If you don't know how to pack, or it's been so long since you have that you have forgotten, then you are lazy. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.

  13. I tye a length of super tack cord to the cutter before removal, pull the cutter out, then cut the cord. I leave quite a bit on each side, usually enough to tye the ends together so that it does not come out. That way when I go to put the cutter back in, the cord acts as a guide back through the flap. The cord will just be a help to the rigger. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.
  14. What is the DOM for the rig? Is it less than a year and a half old? If it is older, has it been in for the SB12-04 modification where they change the cutter placement? If not, send it to be done and have the rigger there send in the Cypres. If the mod has been done, you will also need a length of string or twine to tye to the cutter head so that the cutter will be easier to thread back through when the Cypres comes back. If you want more explanation you can PM me. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.

  19. Im not disagreeing, but what I am saying is that no matter how many hours you have behind the wheel of a car, having the stereo on is without a doubt a distraction, and can only but increase the risk of an accident…. And people here are quick to point out that jumping with your ears plugged into your ipod is a risk, but I bet everyone of these people is more then happy to cruise down the freeway at 120kmph with the stereo blasting, without thinking twice... But in cars we have turn signals and horns to be able to communicate with people. We also have brakes to stop if things get crazy. In the air, we have a very limited time to analyze everything and make decisions, and if those things change we have even less time to correct for them. I have jumped with my iPod in freefall, and the only thing I got out of it was a distraction when I was setting up for landing. That, and one more thing that I had to deal with before exiting. I didn't find that it added hardly anything positive to the jump. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.

  23. Believe it or not, I actually miss the vibe San Marcos used to have sometimes, too. I share some of your sentiments. I have found that home is where your friends are, and where it is comfortable and welcoming. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.
  24. QuoteThis morning I went to get x-rays taken of my back in preparation for what will hopefully be the last follow-up visit with the doctor. X-ray tech: So what happened? How'd you do this to yourself? Me: Skydiving. X-ray tech: Oh, wow. Did you fall? Me: ...Yes. Hey Dave, in unison. "HERE'S YOUR SIGN!" Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.
