  1. Perhaps it's better not to speculate on exactly what sort of internet "research" would lead one to the discovery of a picture like this...
  2. In lieu of another rule... The Bridge Day Safety Awareness Campaign: "Got Helmet?" posters Stickers for your helmet that say "Intelligence Inside" Video: "This is your brain ... This is your brain on the side of a truck." Seriously, any kind of awareness raising you do might make some who hadn't really thought about it much decide to put on a helmet -- and maybe one or two others who hadn't really thought about not wearing one decide to stop wearing one (or try it once without). In either case, they're making a (more) conscious decision; probably a good thing.
  3. I've got a super speed graphic. My model doesn't have the focal plane shutter, so all my lenses for it have leaf shutters. Which lens did you get on it? Most larger metro areas probably have a shop that can develop 4x5 for you -- call around. If not, you can do it via mail-order, or you could get a medium format "roll-film" back for it, or a 4x5 polaroid back. There's even a (black and white) polaroid film that gives you a print and a negative (type 55 -- I've had reasonably good luck with it). As far as clarity/resolution goes, it's all about the lens and tripod. I have no doubt you could blow 4x5's up into murals -- given a nice slow film, good lens, reasonably small aperture, a solid tripod and a long exposure (or good flash combo). Personally, I think the extra negative area also gives you extrordinary subtlety of tones in normal sized prints -- yes, your 8x10 from 35mm may not show grain with modern films, but 8x10 prints from a larger negative seem to have a lot more "depth" (or something similarly subjective). I think there may be some specialty companies around that might have some of the bulbs you need, although they've mostly been out of production for a long time. I've heard of companies with old stocks of them that people making period films call on. If your lens has a leaf-shutter that's not too ancient, it might have an X-sync flash setting that will work with a modern electronic flash. Oh, and my super speed graphic will find itself in the air at some point -- maybe chest-mounted with some sort of cut-away mechanism, or maybe I'll tether it to the plane with break-cord and get some aerials from the door rather than trying to take it with me. We'll see...
  4. Give the Del Dueño añejo a try, if you haven't already...
  5. Hmm... Sounds strangely familiar... Thankfully that wasn't the start of a tradition ... was it?
  6. Why does this post strike you more as advertising than 'Help finding a "professional filming crew" for skydiving project..' or 'what can i do to get our music on some jump videos?(boogies)'? The latter, in particular, seems a pretty much straight up solicitation -- e.g., they're trying to "sell" their music. Not that that particular case is what you intended to limit with the rule. I'm guessing you wanted to prevent people with estabilshed businesses using the forum to push their products/services without contributing in any meaningful way to the forum. The guy with the music is also trying to figure out how to do business, a reasonable thing to discuss on the forum. Anyway, this post just seems like networking to me, since he's not trying to sell us the magazine. My $.02 Respectfully, Jalisco
  7. Well, I'm glad to see this is still kicking around the internet. I looked at it a while back and tried to determine where it was (and whether it was, perhaps, a little fun with photoshop). Here's what (and how) I found out about it. The link I was originally sent went away at some point . The web site says it's in Mississippi, but its actually in Alabama... ------------------------ Mr. Massey, I finally viewed the pictures that you referred to in your email. These pictures were taken from the Rooster Bridge between Demopolis and Livingston. The Rooster Bridge was a drawbridge with an interesting history. In order to raise money to build the bridge, the community held a rooster auction in 1919. Famous people from all over the United States, including Woodrow Wilson and Mary Pickford, donated roosters for the auction. The bridge no longer exists. The pictures were taken by an amateur photographer, Charles Barger, in April 1979. No one on the boat was hurt, and the bridge only sustained minor damages. Thanks for your interest. Lindsy Gardner Demopolis Public Library -----Original Message----- From: Stuart Massey Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 6:36 PM To: Demopolis Public Library Subject: curious Someone sent me this link today, and I wondered if the lettering on the bridge (partially obscured by a yellow "VERTICAL CLEARANCE" sign) may have originally said "DEMOPOLIS DRAWBRIDGE". I can make out the initial "DEMOP..." and the trailing "...BRIDGE". If you have any information about the bridge, people or events pictured, I'd love to know more. Thanks! ......
  8. Hmmm... f5.6 is two stops more than f2.8 -- so if it were zoomed, that would be only 1/4 as much light, or, if you like, 1/4 of the shutter-speed for the same exposure. Even at f3.5 it's 2/3 stop more than the f2.8, which allows you about .63 (less than 2/3) of the shutter speed for the same exposure. Every stop you lop off lets you double your shutter speed, or shoot in half the light. Go for the fast prime lenses....
  9. I'm really glad to see that there are people jumping this camera, as I'm considering buying one. I don't mind being a guinea pig, but, not having any experience, wouldn't make a very good one in this case. I'd still be very interested to hear about experiences with the 30fps progressive scan. Looks like it would probably fit in dboxes the pc120 fits in. What kind of dbox/mount are you using? Thanks!

Does that follow? Would any pilot chute really inflate at anything short of bridle stretch? Seems like until there is some sort of pull at the bridle attachment point, a pilot chute is just a floppy bit of fabric. Now, at your 6 seconds, I probably would want the pilot chute to follow me as little as possible, so reducing the weight of the thing (for a given size) as much as safely possible is, I'm sure, an excellent plan. I'm just saying that the orientation of it prior to bridle stretch is probably a bit uncertain in any case. In the pictures to which you refer, it seems to me like the bridle and pilot chute are just dancing limply together in the the jumper's burble (until bridle-stretch).
  11. Well, I guess somebody'll break down and try one at some point...
  12. Found some info in a thread on camcorderinfo.com. The 30p progressive scan (improved slow-mo) seems like it might be useful for skydiving video. Can any of you experienced video folks out there comment on this? Also, Sony claims 970k actual video pixels for the pc120 and 2048k for the pc330. Would this not make for improved video quality?
  13. Maybe we should reschedule the Harvest Moon, rather than the boogie...
  14. More organizers too... Dave Osbon and Paul Rafferty will be r/w organizing -- think multi-plane formation-load big-ways. Johnny Gates will be there, so maybe we can get a magic carpet or two off. And there will be demo gear: Stilettos, Sabre2s, and Parachute Systems Vortex II containers and Hurricane and ZP.EXE canopies (95sf - 170sf) on hand, if you want to try them.
  15. we left yours up so we could put a memorial plaque on it...
