  1. I don't really think it has a place in modern BASE except for use in fun-away jumps. The norm in BASE has pretty much always been to use all allowable freefall time and initiate deployment at the lowest "safe" altitude. (I'm not sure if "altitude" is the right word for this...) If you're delaying until there's only time to attempt one deployment, with a small margin for variation, then you certainly will not have time to try again once you realize things aren't working. I suppose if you're primarily a bigwall jumper and you take extremely conservative delays then a Sorcerer may have a place in your arsenal. As long as you can maintain a balance between gaining sufficient horizontal separation from the object and pulling high enough to give a reserve a chance, then use it. This just isn't a common practice in BASE these days and it probably won't ever be. edit: "extremely conservative"... does that even make sense...?
  2. No problem dude, glad you liked the video. I'm not going to bridge day this year. Maybe I'll make it out there next year. Definitely keep me informed of your Norway plans, maybe I can tag along.
  3. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna be there. Who else wants to play?
  4. Yeah, actually some rigs have a more secure main pin cover flap than others. A lot of newer rigs are so secure that you can pick the entire rig up by the main pin cover. Some rigs will require a slightly higher tension on the bridle to open this flap or extract the pin. At terminal this will never be an issue since the PC generates far more force than is required to complete the deployment sequence. At the relatively lower speeds associated with a clear and pull, it could be enough of a difference to explain the "hesitation" you experienced. Most likely if you would have opened the main pin cover before you exited, this wouldn't have happened. My reflex has an especially tight "sharkstooth" on the main pin cover.
  5. What type of rig was this on?

    Happy birthday

Hey Ddog, I'm a lowtimer who doesn't know much at all, but I'm just a short drive to the north and I'd love to make some jumps with you. Keep your chin up. Don't let them keep a good dog down.
  7. I don't consider my rig (PerigeePro/ACE) to be outdated, nor do I feel the need to carry a reserve on a BASE jump. I honestly do not believe having a reserve on a BASE jump is going to increase my odds of survival. If anything, it may increase the frequencey of fast slam packing going on in the BASE world. Ever hear someone say, "It's cool, I got a reserve..." ?
  8. Thanks to everyone who made it out there. I had a kick-ass weekend. I got to make some new friends and jump with a really good crew. Congratulations Chick! (You know who you are)You're a friggin' badass, those were some totally solid jumps. You did a really good job this weekend. Welcome to the family. Again thanks to everyone who made it memorable. The videos will go out by the end of the week.
  9. I'm actually going there tomorrow and I was thinking about camping. Any good campsite recommendations?
  10. You can pack it pretty much however you want to. Since you're doing hop n pops, you could even use the mesh slider if you want. If you have a sail slider you should use that. If you use your BASE packjob it'll give you a better idea of what to expect down the road on terminal BASE jumps. A BASE parachute is still a parachute. Skydive it all you want.
  11. Right on, I'll definitely make the drive out then. Thanks guys, see you this weekend.

    Yeah!

    It's my birthday... Oh man...
  13. Is anyone planning on being in Twin Falls next weekend?(19th, 20th, and 21st) I'm planning on going but I'm not positive yet. If other people are going to be there then I'll make the trip out.
  14. I looked for it for a few days now but I can't find it either. Hopefully Dwain will post some information.
  15. Yes... What type of sacrifice do you prefer?
  16. What are the various ways you are configuring the rig for doing low freefalls? I hear that the Gargoyle is best left with the pin cover flap closed regardless of the delay. Some rigs are best with the flap opened first. Are you priming the pins by pulling them partially through the closing loops to shorten the distance they will need to travel? Are you making closing loops out of a more slippery material to reduce the tension required to open the container? Longer closing loops? What pin tension do you feel is low enough, or too low? Any other tricks? Any problems you've noticed with anything you've done?
  17. Hmmm... I know in climbing we use the Kilonewton which is equal to 224.8089 pounds of force. I have no idea how this would apply to your needs. Maybe Hookitt or one of the other riggers in here could help.
  18. #1) Flat packing As soon as a student gets off student status, most likely they will move onto their own gear and start to propack. (Yeah Mantas are big but many students are jumping smaller canopies that can be propacked easily. I can propack a Manta just fine though. Tandems get propacked...) #2) Looking at pull time Somewhere along the line, usually right after graduation (if not sooner) they will be switching to a throwout PC. This makes the need to look at the deployment handle a skill that will not be needed after student status. Aside from that, it makes it very easy for students to roll at deployment time. Which leads me to... #3) Ripcords Why are these still used? I hate springloaded PC's. Too easy for a PC to get trapped in the burble. The student isn't going to use them after they graduate anyway. The common theme here is that students are taught methods that they will not use after student status. Muscle memory is a good thing in the relatively stressful skydiving environment. When you drill a technique over and over, switching methods will confuse and require at least a little re-training. The period immediately after student status is not the place to have to re-learn how to prepare and use your gear. There is already so much else to concentrate on. Plus you're not being as closely watched by more experienced jumpers as you were while a student. Why not practice how you play?
  19. This is a subject I'm also interested in. I brought up a very similar question either on Blinc or here. I'll try and dig it up if I can. Good question though. I hypothesized that removing the PC would remove a bit of parasitic drag and flatten out the glide somewhat. The question is whether it would be enough to make a noticeable difference. A 42" PC seems capable of generating enough drag to steepen the glide and slightly affect performance. You're planning to D-bag or McConkey?
  20. Actually I watched him do an extremely sick McConkey from much lower. I was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It wasn't a cutaway, but just totally.... sick...
