Don't you airborne guys have a lot of gear in a ditty bag that you hang down below you on a rope, so that it hits the ground first, thereby taking some of the weight off the canopy for your own landing? Does that actually allow the canopy to slow down a little in that last second before your feet hit earth? ( o Y o )

Even a water balloon fired from one of those giant slingshots sting like heck. And since the story said the plane was flying very low, all that water probably hit him as one big solid blob. Normally a fire fighter plane would drop higher so that the water has time to spread out and turn into more of a mist to settle upon the flames. ( o Y o )

It might be against manufacturer recommendations, but is it really illegal? Per the FAA? USPA? What if the AAD is out of maintenance, but you just don't turn it on - would that still be "illegal"? I'm curious, since the AAD is not a mandatory piece of equipment... ( o Y o )
