  1. You've seen the bad side of the benefit/risk ratio. If you had known someone that had been the victim of a crime committed by a person that was able to commit the crime because they previously escaped the police because of a no-chase policy, then you would probably think differently. I think your evaluation that "the loss dominates the gain under most probabilities is biased by your friend's experience. My uninformed guess would be the opposite of your uninformed guess. Not too many people flee from police for traffic offenses, right? So your claim that it is natural to panic and flee doesn't seem valid. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  2. I just asserted that a lot of people that flee from police for minor traffic violations are wanted for other crimes. If that is true, then the ratio of benefit to risk is altered. Then the evaluation of whether police should spin the car out of control is altered. No hypothetical involved. Do you think that is true? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  3. Sorry, it seemed obvious to me. You discussed proportionality of the response. That implies a ratio of benefit to risk. I was pointing out that the benefit can include catching wanted criminals, etc. That changes the ratio of benefit to risk. 4. I think it likely that people that won't stop for a cop when they are caught speeding are trying to avoid much more than a speeding ticket. They are trying to avoid things like being busted for an existing arrest warrant on other charges. 5. If there's been no decision in the lower court (summary judgement was denied), then how can one say that the SCOTUS will decide it. Even if the decision to not grant summary judgement will be appealed, how can it go directly to the SCOTUS? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  6. What bullshit! Gore is wasting huge amounts of energy. The goal is to reduce energy use and pollution as much as possible, right? Buying available credits/offsets doesn't reduce either. Isn't the purpose of those credits to allow a commercial facility/factory the ability to get below some regulated limit without having to immediately shut down their factory for modifications to the facility and equipment. It still doesn't reduce the amount of energy used or pollution made, but it gives the factory some time to make modifications, but with a financial penalty (buying the credits/offsets), so that the factory still has an incentive to finally make the changes needed to get in compliance with regulations. Those credits/offsets would still be there if Gore didn't buy them, for purchase by an industrial user. Am I completely wrong about the intended purpose of the credits? We hear that Al is now installing solar panels, etc. Seems like he's waited for people to notice his hypocrisy before he did it. 7. I switched DZs after 3 jumps, had to be briefed on procedures for deploying the reserve without cutting away (no PC). I listened and nodded my head, then decided that I would cut away regardless (shot and a half capewells). 8. I wasn't happy at all about the shitty the condition of my student gear. It looked like shit that had been rolled around in the desert - the experienced jumper's gear was quite different. You had to really want to jump back then to use that crap. My instructor told me before my 3rd jump that the canopy was packed wet a couple days before! There was no reason for him to tell me that. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  9. You know, I can't really think of the last time I had to PROVE I was married to get the traditional benefits/recognition of being married. So, I suppose most could just claim to be legally married and most companies/hospitals/etc. would provide benefits with no checking. The public would still have to "put up with it", regardless of what church sanctioned the marriage. There is a lot of prejudice against polygamy and incestuous relationships that wouldn't go away under such a system that you suggest. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  10. Yes, however that is with RW jumpers. Freeflyers are all over the sky on group jumps, every break off for them is like a mega funnel, don't you know.
  11. What do you think caused the hard cutaway-pull? On my last chop, I never had to 'stow' my handles. I just grabbed my toggles through the handles (I have a small D-handle and loop cutaway). 12. How would you see it being different? No marriage allowed unless a church gives its OK? What problems would be solved, besides getting rid of the definition/same sex aspect of it? The public would also have to put up with polygamy and incestuous marriages, because the prohibition of it would have to end. We might not even be able to count on marriage being between two humans. 13. Darryl Hannah should be the more well known/recognized advocate for the movement instead of hypocrite Al. Heard her interviewed by Sean Hannity. He gave her a lot of compliments for being true to her preaching, for her work in regards to human slavery, etc. She seems pretty reasonable, as far as environmental activists go. Plus, she is a lot nicer to look at...her voice and laugh are sooo nice. Splash was a great movie
  14. Which is exactly why the government should stay OUT of people's personal relationships. That would be OK with me. Churches wouldn't have the power to take assets and decide how to split them, or make one spouse pay the other every month. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  15. Being heavy doesn't mean being able to fight well. It does mean not being able to run away from bullies, or being able to chase after bullies. For the brits: What does "nutters" mean, besides being an insult. For me, the key point in the story was the mention that the mom consistently hasn't been taking him to state mandated appointments with doctors, etc. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 16. As I said before, for spouses that share finances, both spouses are being punished if the penalty is a monetary fine. That is stupid. 17. >There are consequences. They are called divorce lawyers. True, but the fact of infidelity has no bearing on the proceeding. I think it is reasonable to say that it should matter. Actually, what seems to destroy more marriages is money issues. Should the spendthrift be charged to face the consequences? There usually is no vow to not be stingy. They are. Always have been. Along the lines of, "Do you take this woman...until death do you part?" "I do." So add another contract to be breached? Usually, doesn't the breaking of a contract put a person at risk of some sort? For many, there is nothing but benefit from breaking the marriage contract. I say that it is reasonable to change that, at least if the vow of fidelity is broken. Many states don't even require counseling when one spouse claims "incompatibility". At least if there was a pre-nup, both parties would know what the terms of a split would be at the time they enter into the contract. Divorce is used as a weapon by some to make their spouse support them without having to put up with their company. 18. Why not? Some CRW guys have continued to use such devices, I think. If it holds the canopy together until line stretch, why not? For a reserve, the diaper eliminates the sometimes helpful trait of a freebag to separate, but for a main it doesn't matter compared to a std d-bag. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  19. Yes, damn right - really! There sure as hell should be some consequence to breaking that particular marriage vow. Of all the 'grounds for divorce', I think that is the most important, and it should damn well matter which spouse did it. Government already is involved in deciding the terms of divorce. I think pre-nuptual agreements should be required before marriage. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 20. If skydivers wanted to improve their enviro friendliness, we would discourage the habit of making bonfires. For now, we can't skydive without burning lots of fuel, but we don't have to have an open fire for hours to partake in our hobby. It really does piss me off when I see people burning leaves with open fires. I know people in rural areas that regularly burn much of their trash to reduce their waste disposal costs. They only thing limiting it are infrequent burn-bans. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 21. Quite right! There isn't a problem that can't be solve by proper application of a new law. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  22. Bullshit! All kinds of laws are broken in full view of police without them being enforced. It seems pretty stupid to punish both husband and wife by making them pay (assuming they still share finances they are both paying) when one should be considered the victim. A better punishment, I think, would be to allow the wronged spouse to obtain a divorce with preferential treatment in terms of child custody, child support payments, alimony, division of assets. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  23. Can you give an example? Yeah. Getting my canopy into its D-bag. Quite right! I was putting 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag my entire engineering career. No problem. 24. I would think that the road and bystander conditions at the time of the 'bump' would be important. Doing it on a windy, mountain road with sheer dropoffs could predictably result in a bad crash. I wouldn't expect that to be the actual circumstances, of course. Why should it be any different in the potential for causing injury than a spike strip? 25. I think we need to know exactly how this question was asked - was it part of a physics test, or a riddle, what is the context? Like the 'airplane on a conveyor belt riddle', the exact wording of the question matters a great deal.
