  1. From the UPT website, test for sigma tandem endorsement (not the new one) the first question is " historically, what is the leading single cause of tandem fatalities? Then followed by: What does the vector 3 tandem system do to address this problem? I was just wondering the answer to those questions. I'm not taking the tandem course, nor do I want to anytime soon. I was just wondering. Anyone want to shed some light?
  2. I use one optima II, but I have thought about getting another one and just setting one alarm on it to the hard deck... just incase one fails the hard deck alarm could be backed up. I have thought that 2 wouldn't be very comfortable inside my G3 though... i guess its worth a try.
  3. What about length of risers? If you had 21's would they be easier to pull to your abdomen than 25's?
  4. I always start my double front approach from about 1/4 to 1/2 brakes...toggles about to shoulders or so. This was good for the 170. For the 150 it helped too, but still could not hold them down for about 2 seconds. I haven't tried from very deep brakes yet, but I'm sure it would help. haven't been jumping much lately due to weather. Each canopy and downsize is indeed different, and not expect the same characteristics from one downsize to the next even if its the same canopy. I dont think bulking up anymore would help. I can do about 10 pullups.
  5. Hello, all of that talk about big riser vs harness turns was interesting and informative. However I was really just wanting to know why going from 190 to 170 the riser pressure was less, and when I went from 170 to 150 it was substantially more, even more than the 190. All on sabre 2s. All I am doing and interested in is increasing speed a little for landing, by doing double front approaches. No turns or anything like that. I found it makes it easier to land with a bit more speed.
  6. Yes, this was the first thing I did when I jumped the canopy for the first time, like I learned in the flight 1 course. Luckily, they were quite long. Pulled on the brakes while looking up to see when it started moving the tail. Its a good 6 -7 inches. Pulling on the fronts while looking up, there is no tail deflection. I'm actually getting my brakes lines shortened a bit b/c the sweet spot in the flare is lower than I was used to.
  7. I cant pull the risers down faster or further with the 150. Its harder to pull them even from 1/4 brakes and cant hold them as long. Since it is higher wingload, I guess that is why. It was the opposite on my previous downsize though. I've got about 150 double front approaches on the 170. Half of those are landing or planing out on rears, then transitioning to brakes. On the upside harness turns are easier, which makes sense.
  8. Instead of starting a new thread, I just found this one, so I will ask my question here. I just downsized from sabre 2 170 (1.35) to sabre 2 150 (1.5), which was approved by the DZ s&ta. I have been doing double front approaches on the 170, and have been able to dive the canopy for about 5 seconds before the pressure builds where I have to release to enter the landing phase. With the 150, I was expecting the pressure to be less and I could dive the canopy longer. Turns out it is the opposite. I can barely Double front dive the canopy for 3 seconds before they are ripped from my hands. Naturally, the recovery of the 150 is a bit longer than the 170, but I could dive the 170 for longer so the end resulting "swoop" or surf of the 2 is about the same. When I went from my 190 s2 to 170 Sabre 2 the riser pressure was less, so why not now with the 150? This is kind of a curve ball to me in my journey to learn HP canopy landings.
  9. There is an incident in a parachutist about a guy with about 50 jumps with a new full face helmet. It fogged up under canopy and he couldn't get the visor up (gloves?) and ended up doing a 180 and smashed in the runway and got broken. Coming open in freefall is not fun either. Neither of these would be good for a AFF student. After student status they are great.
  10. Update: STill haven't got my order yet! First emailed my order on June 10, 2013. Just got an email about defective material, this and that, and having to re make it, and will be here by the end of the month. A month ago I was told it would be here in 2 weeks. Just dissapointed, I've been waiting 18 weeks for something I thought I would get in 5-8. STILL jumping in blue jeans. I was hoping to get them and be impressed then order a freefly suit. Good prices, but having to play waiting game back and forth I am debating on whether I want to try again.
  11. I usually support new, smaller companies, but I cannot say I would recommend freefall skydiving. Firstly, my order got cancelled due to confusion from the owner, after 2 weeks. We got this resolved, then my credit card finally got charged, so I was like, all I have to do now is wait. It has been 10 weeks since my card was charged, and have sent several emails with no reply, asking the status of my order. It was quoted 5-8 weeks wait time. Unhappy customer. Will my order ever get here? Was it actually made? Has he gone under and just gone with my money? If you dont want to be left with these questions, I would not recommend freefall skydiving, and just go with a known name brand so you can be sure you will get what you ask for.
  12. Totally normal, I mean who is totally calm at 15 jumps? Give it some time, and you will be more confident in your own pack jobs than a packers.
  13. Check out this video of a line twist on a sabre 2 170. This can be regarded as a student canopy. I dont know the wing loading on the one on the video, but you can see how much altitude is lost with the second view. It is only like 1.5 line twists. This is the canopy I jump, and have never had a spinning line twist like this one. Maybe because the end cells are not fully inflated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gBYlL1taU8
  14. Maybe he went to change the closing loop, and grabbed a closing pin necklace instead?
  15. Thats one thing that concerns me with the spectra reserve cord... someone could easily pull some of the cord out above the pillow and just snip it with a pair of scissors real quick, and wouldnt be noticeable. Thats why I check it every time my rig lays around a while, just being paranoid but a real possibility...with all the crazies out there today.
  16. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I have seen pics of the old vectors with the middle flap. I always thought that the lines had entangled with one of the side closing flaps... glad to know this now! I was just stating what the manual said about unstowed line length, they must have put it because they believe they get the best results from it. I dont doubt your method a bit... you have been jumping longer than I have been alive. Ill probably start leaving a little more unstowed line now after this forum. I actually have already seen your video where you do the high alt hnp and fight the line twists for a long time, but didnt mind watching it again...impressive! Plus im reading the canopy and its pilot now as well. Thanks for your info, great talking to you.
  17. The old vector M-series manual says not to leave more than 15 inches of unstowed line between the bag and connector links. The newer manual says to leave no more than 15 to 20 inches. I guess because they have had lines entangle with container flaps before, but probably is rare.
