I'm well known to the ATF/DHS. I've numerous interactions with the Alphabet boys-n-girls, and I've a Class 3 Curios & Relics FFL. 556 can used in a 223 chamber, but it isn't advised In a nutshell... The chamber leade is shorter in the 223 chamber and longer in the 556 chamber. The 556 is a higher velocity & chamber pressure load. Firing the 556 in a 223 chamber will result in higher chamber pressures, this higher pressure could result in primer pocket gas leaks, blown cartridge case heads and gun functioning issues. Firing the 223 in a 556 chamber with it's longer leade, can result in loss of velocity and accuracy...
