Cool!

Question: at the end, it says that the service ceiling for this helicopter is 15,000 feet. How did it get to 20,000 - 25,000 for the record attempts, then?

Service ceilings are based on a couple of factors. Considered "the maximum usable altitude of an aircraft" If a service ceiling in a piston type plane like a Cessna 182 is 18000 ft, thats when the plane stops climbing at a significant enough rate (100 feet per min) to make anything higher a real struggle. But the plane will go to 20,000 and higher if you want to wait. I personally have had them to 22K

The same rule applies to turbine planes and helicopters but compressor stalls based on the type of engine are the risk there, meaning the engine might quit.
You live more in the few minutes of skydiving than many people live in their lifetime

For the big formation record attempts there were 4 Mi-26´s in formation (see picture attached) , each one carrying about 75 to 80 skydivers, which is a weight of about 7000 kgs . The Mi 26 can lift 20000 kgs
Not too sure anymore what the exit altitude was but it was minimum 20000 ft

World Team 1996
On the last day of the event, the clouds were too low (10 000ft) to go for a large formation world record attempt.
So instead, everyone who wanted could go for a jump out of 1 Mi-26 chopper...

I was on the chopper, seemed like a good idea at the time . once we got airbourne whole nother story!! thing lifted off soooooo slowley, did not think we would make it to altitude, very heavy. very heavy. made it to 3 k and all out on two passes. Hind sight being 20 20 wouldn't do it again. Fuck that!
