riggerrob 561 #5 April 15, 2010 It looks like an experimental mesh-less pilot chutes. The configuration is more like a sea anchor or those drag chutes sprinters wear in training.

Is that some sort of pull force measuring device attached to the bridle? The PC isn't attached to the system, its being held by the jumper through some sort of handle.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." NickDG 23 #7 April 15, 2010 Yeah, I think it's Hank testing what would later on, and in different form, become the bomb drogues he sold to the military. NickD
riggerrob 561 #8 April 16, 2010 Yes! I remember Troy Loney telling me about them in 1993. The US Navy tested them in China Lake around 1990. I found both articles (low-cost drouge for bombs)published in the AIAA journal on aerodynamic decellerators and sewed a couple as pilot chutes. I only jumped them a couple of times, but they worked fine for deploying my sport main. Considering the high cost of tandem drogues, it should be less expensive to sew square drogues. ZigZagMarquis 8 #9 April 18, 2010 I was going to guess it was Hank too. Testing one of his pilot chute designs. Highly likely it was at Elsinore. Why... it was Hank...
howardwhite 5 #10 April 21, 2010 OK, here's the handwritten note on the original scan. Does it make any sense? HW
