Digitude vs. Alti III

Recommended Posts

This was pretty much buried in the other alitmeter thread and I was really wanting to get some opinions.
Through the discussion about accuracy of altimeters I started to wonder how much more accurate are the Digi-tudes or other digital altimeters? Is it worth the trouble with batteries and a fairly non-KISS approach?

Dave, I have a digitude and to tell you the truth it is not a s high maintenance. the battery is good for a very long time, especially if you turn it off after every jump. Keep the night light on only during night jumps and you will not have to change the battery more than once a year if that! And it is not a breakable as some people make it sound, but it is plastic so take care of it. I would not advise dropping any altimeter. Plus I have found it more accurate than analog up high. I think that the accuracy is pretty similar at break-off and lower. Jump one to see if you like it. And you can get a decent deal on them to where they will come out to about $150-$160.

Actually I just did this last weekend. I normally jump with a digitude and I bought an Altimaster II for a back up just in case. My digitude read about 100 ft lower then the altimaster at 12,500 and they were within 50 ft of each othere at 1000ft. But of course I have no idea which was the most accurate. I do prefer my digitude though.
little boy to little girl. Oh yea if thats what it is lets hear it meow!

I am planning on trying a digi again myself- I was on student status and didn't like it at that time, I blame that on being a bit of a luddite about certain things- But my FT-50 reads about 500 feet high at 10,500 and is right on at 4,000 - I have never heard any one complain about accuracy with the Digitudes-

Overall, I'd have to say my Alti III is more accurate than my Digitude. Both seem to agree with the aircraft altimeter to within 200 ft at 3000 feet, and to 500 feet at 12,500. However, the Alti III is less prone to spurious errors when used near someone else's burble (i.e. when docked on someone.)
