a helicopter needs an hour of maintenace for every hour of flight time (roughly). The flyboys can't do that, they need a crew chief certified to turn wrenches and the like.

I'm the only one you see on the highway pulling a helicopter behind a pick-up, i install and remove the main rotor blades and do all the daily maintenance on it. I guess you could say that I'm the "Go to Man" when something has to be done.

"Chopper John" flies a 1965 Alouette 2. It's ex-german military. It will get you and three of your friends to 5K in 3 minutes, and if you had the money it would get you to 25K.

The powerplant is a Turbomeca Artouste II C6, de-rated to 450 SHP. I doubt it would take that long to get to 25K, but we don't know because we haven't gone that high yet. Not that it couldn't, though. The service ceiling is 25K.

I have about 2500 hrs in Dauphin's and they say the service ceiling on them is 18,000 feet. Those wacky French guys and their whimsical sense of humor. (No offense Remi.)

Of course we were using Lycoming LTS 101 engines. There are rumors of something new on the horizon, but I can't see that far.
