Bad skydiving landing video

Recommended Posts

I don't know the when and where, or who it was exactly.

Looking carefully at the faces and equipment, I can tell you that it was the Golden Knights' Black Demonstration Team, pre-1992.

The team member that comes to the rescue is Paul Guerra, who was the Black Team Leader at one time. The canopy appears to be an XL Cloud, which we life cycled with the Star Trac in 1992.

That was a nasty break - injuries like that happen on show site very rarely, but we talked every show about how we would handle it. Notice that the Ground Control NCO disappears from the picture . . . he went to get the EMS crew.

I can't say for certain, but the sound appears to be real. As a paramedic for 23 years, I've heard that kind of crepitus before. Yeowch!!!!:o
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.
-The World Famous Tink. (I never heard of you either!!)

He was almost fully flared rediculously high. Perhaps he was overshooting the target or something. I would like to think that the Golden Knights knew how to fly better than that. Of course there could have been extenuating circumstances, but the canopy control on landing is what screwed him.

Im pretty sure he was trying to sink it in, like for an accuracy jump. That is why he was flying in full breaks.

When a person is "sinking in" thier canopy, they aren't in full brakes. He was pretty much in full brakes and you saw what it did to him.

He def was coming in with his legs too far apart, and I guess the force of the landing knocked him down and he F*ed up his leg, Ouch!

It was canopy control, not how far apart his legs were. Now, if he had prepared to have a hard landing and was going to PLF, his legs were too far apart and should have been together and ready to roll. Putting your feet and knees together wont help you fly or land better. Only students are told that so that in case they have a hard landing they can more easily PLF at at least wont have limbs out all over. Same reason they have students flare to their crotch...people pretty much stop doing that when they get some experience.

Travis
