Straight to B-lic? (benefits of registering A-lic w/ USPA?)

Anybody skip over an A-license and go right for a B (as far as USPA's concerned)?

I'm thinking about waiting to send USPA $20, until AFTER I meet the B-lic requirements. Pushing 30 jumps and still have several tasks for my A, but getting my card stamped is do-able in another 3 or 4 jumps. It just seems like I'd be sending them another $20 by the time I got my A-lic card for my B .

I did exactly that, but the A license was handled the same as the others back then.

My recommendation: finish the tasks on your A license proficiency card and get it stamped. Save your $20 until you complete all of the B License requirements.

These days the only people that send in $ to USPA for an A license are those who want a number for posterity.

Once you get the card signed off and stamped it (the card) becomes your A-license. The only reason to send the $20 in to USPA is if you want a number to go with it. You do not need this number for anything though, and I suggest to all of my students to wait until they satisfy the B-license requirements to send in for a license.

i did this, though it ended up taking longer than I suspected. Scan or copy the sheet with the A stamp and keep it safe. Check in at a new DZ took a bit longer than it would with the USPA card, but no real issues.

I didn't skip A, but I went straight from A to C. By the time I was able to get water training, I was at 130ish jumps and jumping a lot, so I knew I would get to 200 before too long. There was no immediate value to me for having an actual B license (I didn't need it to attend any boogies, I wasn't interested in night jumps, and I wasn't going for my coach rating).

I got the A because although I was aware that the card functioned as a license, I always thought it was supposed to be kind of a temporary solution. Plus, I was such a problem student that I wanted to see an official A license number printed on an official card... somehow made it "real."

One practical disadvantage I could see would be that the stamped card is now your only "proof" that you're licensed. If you lose it, you would have to go to the trouble of recreating it with the instructional staff where you got your license. Probably not an insurmountable obstacle (particularly if you and/or the DZ where you met your A requirements keeps a photocopy of the card in their records), but something to think about if you're going to travel to other DZs.

Having sent the card in to USPA, it's now documented at USPA that you've met the requirements. Show up at another DZ without the card, and they can look you up online.

My C license was my first. I never saw any reason to get a license until there was a demo jump that I wanted to be on years ago. I also got my D so I could get a PRO rating for demos.
