Lindsey 0 #3 April 1, 2008 Ice for swelling. Heat will make swollen tissues swell more and therefore hurt more.-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
jsaxton 0 #4 April 2, 2008 For injuries that have soft tissue swelling I use ice (15 min on, 15 min off) for the first 2-3 days along with ibuprofin. After that heat.
jrcolo 0 #5 April 2, 2008 try ice for 20 min then heat for 20 min
Hayfield 0 #6 April 2, 2008 Ice for the first 24 hours (use whatever interval is comfortable). Heat after that."Remember the First Commandment: Don't Fuck Up!" -Crusty Old Pete

Chubba 0 #8 April 2, 2008 I second the ibuprofen for any type of inflammatory pain, that stuff works miracles. I've sprained my left ankle at least a dozen times and it definetely helps a lot.
Dumpster 0 #9 April 2, 2008 Ice until the Vicodin (or Darvocet) kicks in. Easy Does It
gravitysucks 0 #10 April 2, 2008 Heat has little therapeutic value in an orthopedic injury. It does feel damn good, though. Still, I say forget the heat. Ice it, take your anti-inflammatories regularly, wrap it and elevate it.
NREMT 0 #11 April 4, 2008 Got it, Ice, Vicodin, Heat. Thanks! Oh yeah and Ibuprofen.

AKCrash 0 #13 April 9, 2008 for fracture or sprain use Ice. Use heat when you have for instance stiff muscle because heat will make the tissues expand. I broke my tibia twice on bad landings.. Ice and oxycodone would be two things you will greatly appreciate!"Those who would give up Essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" Franklin
gravitysucks 0 #14 April 10, 2008 QuoteHow high would you elevate it Yeah I'm thinking about 12.5K would be perfect! I still land with my right foot slightly lower than my left, a habit I acquired when I sprained my left ankle (fishing accident.) Really be careful with the heat though. It will help you stretch it out better, but remember you just overstretched it anyways when you sprained it. the good feeling from the heat lulls you into complacency thinking the joint is healing when really it's a slow process. Plus the risk of burn injury from prolonged heat (seen it) and the fact that heat draws inflammation back into the injured tissues.
