Outcome of political arguments

Recommended Posts

I am unlikely to turn into a rabid conservative, or a rabid socialist, but I have definitely received information that's made me research and changed opinions.

Internet discussions are one means of receiving information. Others include tv, newspapers, radio, etc.

It was after much consideration, and much self analysis, that I allowed myself to change the mindset I had about the death penalty.

That was as political an argument as I can think of.

So - yeah - conversations here, as well as other places, have spurred me to do independent research above and beyond what I normally would. I just don't have the time to devote to that much of it.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

If you don't mind my asking... The last I followed any DP discussion here you were vehemently Pro (I didn't know the full background but understood you had some strong personal reasons for your stance). Has the change come since then, or were you formerly Anti and then changed to Pro?
You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly.

Formerly extremely, solidly, vehemently, immovably PRO.

I have since changed.

Now I'm only for the DP for vengeance not justice - which makes me anti DP because vengeance is not n=always justice.

She already has a big enough head, so we won't let Wendy know she had a lot to do with spurring me to do more research.:P

Yep. I changed my stance on minimum wage after reading some links posted here. I've also learned new things from several posters - Lawrocket, Kallend, Skycop and Gowlerk come to mind.

Yes, this. And to expand on it, I don't think minds are made up or changed all at once. Occasionally an argument will get someone to pay enough attention to look deeper into an issue. Change starts for me when I begin to see that a viewpoint or opinion other than the one I already have formed may be of value in some cases.

None of us have the time or inclination to be continually challenging ourselves on too many issues at one time. If we did we would constantly vacillate and never make up our minds.

Add to that the fact that all too often what passes for debate is merely posturing and puffery. Most of us recognize that and ignore it as the waste of time it is. After that comes the fact that what is being argued is often of no real importance. Or the person making the argument has already made themselves irrelevant to us by proving themselves not to present thoughtful reasoned arguments.

Most often when I make my mind up on a new issue I have weighed both sides and find myself not fully convinced either way. But like most people I need to decide one way or another and I go with the side I most agree with. This is the situation most amenable to change, because the balance is often delicate. But only if I find a reason to reopen the internal debate in my mind.

Just thinking about this and writing it down has possibly made me understand a little more about myself and why I believe the things I do.
