For now it will show on the Sony owned crackle streaming site for free. Best marketing scheme to get Crackle in the main stream media ever!:P

Yes, yes, I'm sure that was the plan all along. :S

***If you were corporate counsel for Regal Cinemas, knowing that the North Koreans were behind these cyber-attacks, and knowing that a Christmas Day attack, although unlikely, would kill hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent civilians, and would destroy the corporation you represent, what would your legal advice be?

Not be a coward. Period.

I know you're going to give all sorts of excuses why that's not the answer "corporate counsel" should/would/could give, but you asked me what I would advise.

I would find a way to stand up to the bully.

I would get the protection of the National Guard if I had to.

I would run disclaimers in the papers saying the theaters are under threat from North Korea and IF people don't want to come to the showings they are certainly welcome to stay away.

But . . . I'd find a way to show the film.

And how would you deal with the repercusisonf rom the other studios, because their movies are now taking a financial hit, because of the actions you as the movie theatre have taken?

If you'd like to talk about how film distribution works from studio to theater and what the deals are and how the money flows we can do that, but I can pretty well guarantee there would be zero "repercusison."

If you have information that shows that a lower turnout at the theaters would not cost movie theaters and studios money, please explain.

I didn't say it wouldn't potentially lose some money. I said there would be no repercussions against a theater who decided to run the film by other other studios as you had suggested.

I wonder what percentage of the populace has interweb access.

Almost zero. It's entirely possible the general population of North Korea has no idea it's happening and I can almost guarantee what they do know is a corrupted story fed to them by the government.

For instance, most of the general population of North Korea is under the impression they are at war with the US AND are winning. They live an a world that would not be unfamiliar to Winston Smith.

Payback's a bitch. I wonder what percentage of the populace has interweb access.

I'm guessing unless you are part of the ruling inner circle, or part of the military hacking group, you have no access.

Now what has me curious is if the outage is due to regular hackers...or state-sponsored hackers.

It would be nice if it was what we in the business call, "backhoe fade."

Top level domain: kp
kp. 172800 IN NS ns2.kptc.kp.
kp. 172800 IN NS ns1.kptc.kp.
ns1.kptc.kp. 172800 IN A 175.45.176.15
ns2.kptc.kp. 172800 IN A 175.45.176.16

Right there is a lame practice:
All their nameservers are on the same net. [facepalm]

APNIC has allocated them: 175.45.176.0/22
I'm not seeing routes on the Internet for that.

I doubt most of them have access to toilet paper.

Ever see the story about satellite pictures of N Korea at night? Basically the entire country outside of Pyongyang is pitch black - no lights, compared to S Korea & China. But good for them that they're spending money on nuclear weapons while their people starve so The Little Fat Kid can afford his funny haircuts.

Skydekker said that, not me. What I said was that allowing this movie to be shown would have a significant negative financial impact on the movie studios and theaters, which you appear to concede.

Mmmm...I think that would revolve around you definition of "significant."

I'm not even certain it would be quantifiable, but acknowledge it would probably be non-zero.

Here's the issue; how do you KNOW what any film was supposed to make on any given weekend?

Let me just say it outright, you don't. You can't. It's impossible. Hollywood spends a metric crap ton of money trying to figure this out for every film it thinks it might release. People's entire careers are based around it. There are web sites devoted to it. Yet . . . they get it woefully wrong all the time.

You and Andy 908 are of course correct that I have no "hard data" to back up my claims, nor do I know for sure how significant the financial hit would be. However, the people who's job it is to know these things, corporate counsel and other suits, decided to pull the movie. I thought it was a sound decision for the reasons I've previously expressed. And the people with access to the "hard data" decided to pull the movie. Maybe we're all wrong. But, the people insisting that Sony and the movie theaters show the movie are asking those corporations to take a huge financial risk. It's really easy to do that with other people's money. Not so easy when you work for Sony or a movie theater chain, and it's your job on the line. Not to mention the (outside, I'll concede) chance of an actual terrorist attack.

I want to see it. That said, I'm now a little afraid to. Not because of anything North Korea could possibly do, but because I watched an episode of M.A.S.H. Do you know the one?

The one where the Catholic Church's, National Legion of Decency, decided the movie, "The Moon is Blue" was immoral and without any socially redeeming qualities, so no movie theater in the US would run it. So Hawkeye and Trapper John, thinking it must contain really awesome pornography in it, conspire to trade and swindle their way to getting a copy only to be disappointed to find everyone fully clothed.

What's odd is there are still films that were condemned in that era and still are. Today, many of those films would be considered "quaint" in what they were banned for.

If they didn't like the Seth Rogan version, I don't think they will like the Larry Flynt version, either.
