The need to be "in" on something rules the night. It's not everybody, but there are enough of them, and their effect is multiplied by this whole interweb thingy. Also, watch our network news sometime. Going by that, about 80% of the population mostly wants warm fuzzy "human interest" information; about 15% want "sky is falling" and the 5% who actually want news of the day watch BBC America (or other such similar stuff).
