An American Carol

If you think all Hollywood ever produces is far left wing crap, then this may be the best movie ever written . . . for you.

Blatantly and unabashedly from the extreme far right wing perspective, An American Carol takes on one of the right wing’s most nefarious villains, Michael Moore.

Of course, its writer/producer, David Zucker, best known for his genre parodies Airplane!, Police Squad and High School High, is apparently too big of a wuss to actually use the name Michael Moore, so he very cleverly changes it to “Michael Malone”, played by Kevin Farley. Farley proves once again, just like Jim Belushi, that just because you’re related to talent, doesn’t mean you actually have any.

Malone is the “Scrooge” in this right wing tale of people gone wrong in their beliefs and is visited by several ghosts of the past; Patton, George Washington and Trace Adkins. Well, ok, maybe Adkins isn’t a ghost of the past but certainly his music ought to be.

The Malone character is clearly not just Michael Moore, but the personification of all things even vaguely left of Bill O’Reilly, who makes an appearance in the film and slaps Malone “just because he likes to.” Slapping is actually a big theme in the film what with Patton being in it.

Ok, so at this point I’m going to leave the review part and ask “Why was this film made?”

Zucker and friends must believe there is market for at least one film that bashes Hollywood and its frequent leftist hypocrisy. All of the entertainment industry that “hates America.” All of the drug addled minds of people like; Kelsey Grammer, Leslie Neilson and Dennis Hopper. Oh wait, those people are in this film. Jon Voight also appears.

So, this is what I don’t get about it. Here are all these really talented right wing entertainment types that are making a film bashing the Hollywood left and to what end? Is it to change the perception of Hollywood? I certainly don’t think that’s going to happen by bashing it. Is it to show that Hollywood is a balance of left and right? Well, not according to this film. Is it to pander and tap into the hate caused by people like Bill O’Reilly? Hmmm, might be on to something there.

I really wanted this movie to be funny. I really wanted to be able to laugh at some of the foibles and hypocrisy I see in Hollywood on a daily basis, but instead what I see on screen are the same screeds I see from the extreme right wing wackos like O’Reilly that are parroted out of the mouths of some of my more right of center friends on a daily basis.

So it's nothing new.

Here was the tipping point for me. At the end of the movie, Malone finds himself at a “going away” concert being held on the 4th of July for all of the armed forces. On stage is Trace Adkins singing a country western patriot song in front of the American flag. As the camera pans the audience, we see standing at attention the ghosts of American soldiers from WWII, Vietnam, the Korean War, the Civil War (really?) and the Revolutionary War. None of this is played for laughs. It’s dead serious.

So, while my writing teachers have always pushed me to include a larger point in my stuff, this goes way overboard into preaching . . . and to who; the choir?

...you would be wrong because its early 20th century role was to aid in the destruction of the US labor force.

This sounds hilarious - I await the youtube upload.

if you think o'reilly is "extreme right wing", you either haven't objectively watched him much or at all, or you looking from WAY over on the left. yes he is on the right, but he's far from extreme.

i want to see this movie. the idea of a michael moore type character getting slapped around along with a pro america theme is appealing to me. it will still have to be funny for me to enjoy it. i'll probably have to wait for it to hit pay per view though, i'll be using my babysitter time for huning the rest of this month.

It was awesome! I saw it on opening night last Friday. It's amazing how fast the hardcore lefties rise to attack that which clearly shows their senseless logic for what it is. I would tell you some of the jokes but don't want to spoil it. I highly recomend finding a way way to see it.
I think this election is really exposing many posters real position, if it hadn't been exposed already.
McCain is undoubtedly one of the most liberal Republicans in Congress. I can't think of any other Republicans more in the center than McCain. Obama on the other hand is, as shown by his short voting record and his speeches one of, if not the most liberal Democrat in Congress. So we have a guy in the Center and a far left loon.
Still we have all the clearly partisan Democrats on this site spouting all the Democrat talking points, defending their loon, absurdly trying to paint John McCain as a far right candidate, and at the same time, claiming objectivity and denying their political affiliation. What a joke!

I really don't think I saw a single gag in the entire movie I hadn't already seen on the internet. The only original thing I saw at all was its "well right of center" perspective applied to a major motion picture genre parody.

Hmm. So why do ya figure Obama is getting all the independents and undecideds to vote for him? Either there's a massive conspiracy to "hide the truth" and the "evil liberal media is blah blah" (or insert your favorite theory here) or most people don't see it like you do.

To make money.

Sounds like it might provide a few laughs too.

I really don't see the mystery there at all. In 1984 Mondale was leading Reagan in the polls the day before Reagan won 49 states. The polls showed Al Gore winning in 2000 and Kerry winning in 2004. I don't know of one single instance in which the polls showed the Republican candidate ahead. The polls are clearly titled to the left. I have often wondered why Democrats continue to use this same strategy inspite of its failure rate. ACORN already having been busted with election fraud and being sued in 14 different states tells me that the Obama camp is not so sure that they are actually winning.

To be honest I am concerned about this. Bill Clinton's presidency was a national embarassment, but we were able to survive as a country. If through the use of election fraud and a lot of clueless people who can't see Obama's Socialist policies for what they are, he were to get elected, then I don't think this country could ever be the same.

Saw it today, I laughed a few times, but set my expectations low, as it was supposed to have humor a-la-airplane...

The film was marketed as a "right-wing" film (on the radio anyway), and the trailers were showing obvious pokes at Moore and O'Donnell. So, clearly it's a "message" film of sorts. Yes, it speaks to the choir of supporting the troops and just conveys some slapstick at the left...not much additional substance. Was it a great movie? No. Was I disappointed? Nah...;)

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
