Ban "sexist" advertising?

Recommended Posts

News:
EU wants to ban 'sexist' TV commercials

MEPs want TV regulators in the EU to set guidelines which would see the end of anything deemed to portray women as sex objects or reinforce gender stereotypes.

This could potentially mean an end to attractive women advertising perfume, housewives in the kitchen or men doing DIY.

Such classic adverts as the Diet Coke commercial featuring the bare-chested builder, or Wonderbra's "Hello Boys" featuring model Eva Herzigova would have been banned.

The new rules come in a report by the EU's women's rights committee.

Ms Svensson said: "Gender stereotyping in advertising straitjackets women, men, girls and boys by restricting individuals to predetermined and artificial roles that are often degrading, humiliating and dumbed down for both sexes."

Ha ha thats really funny.

Your link says "the sun" and yet goes to the telegraph. I doubt that the sun would carry your article as they have this on page3 www.page3.com (NSFW for Americans  )

what about the EU's own advert on youtube http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,492131,00.html

Anyway I like sexist advertising my wife doesn't - and in the US you've got no choice the government decided you weren't responsible enough :P

I have always mentioned my problem with our commercials and how they portray woman. I never understood why a half-naked girl who always looks ready for action has to be holding my brake pads. I would rather know technical data and pricing.

I do think it is degrading then again I think flashing your boobs for altitude is degrading ( I know blasphemy).
However I believe in the freedom of speech and the right for people do to do what they wish. Freedom works both ways we all can’t be dictators of our own land.

Fuck censorship.

Unfortunately it does sell stuff. A number of years ago our company was looking to buy new equipment and the equipment we as the users preferred was the same price as the alternative - problem was equipment we wanted was sold by a fat bald guy and alternative had leggy Linda - guess who our team leader chose to go with?

I don't think it is degrading though. People seem to have this belief that women don't like the attention - a myth largely put forward by ugly old hags I believe. My mother in law is a retired hooker and she went into the trade as she liked sex and money.

The biggest problem with soft porn type advertising is that the people who are offended don't have much choice.

Actually they do have a choice. they can turn the channel or simply not look. That's what I do when I'm hungry and a food commercial comes on. Usually I curse at the tv as I switch channels only to find ANOTHER food commercial which leaves me muttering a string of expletives. :D

I say ban food commercials. Why the fuck do I need to see a biug juicy hamburger at 10:30 at night right before I goto bed. Those fucking dicks!

I am sure some woman like the attention, but I am not sure if it is good attention. Again before everyone attacks me I believe you should have the right to do it, but I have aright not to like it.

I think as a young man even now I am shocked at how woman are viewed by many men. Simply put tits and ass as if there is nothing more to a person then what pleasure they can bring you. I think that’s the problem and I believe the woman who are willing to do it for money or fame are selling out their gender.

I believe it is regressive to the feminist movement not progressive.

You know I used to fight the good fight in that regard. I once voiced my opinion of a certain member here when a pic was posted of her flashing someone and I got lambasted for it. But now that I'm older I thank my lucky stars any time a woman decides I'm worthy of viewing her tatas even if it is for a dollar. ;)

Women resent the attention until they stop getting it.

The Euros can do whatever they want, but with this ban, they would lose the right to make fun of us prudish Americans where we can't sell orange juice with topless women.

I say ban commercials PERIOD. if I want something I can find it w/o an ad. I just mute em and go do something else for a few mins. Whatever happened when pay tv came out to "no more annoying ads"? >:( Edit to add: why I RARLEY watch the boob tube anymore. Drivel and ads.

That necklace she's wearing of the symbol of a female is sexist - I insist that she remove it immediately!

She needs to wear it to prove her gender.

well, "sex sells" is only one side of this equation.

The other side, and the stuff that i'm actually MORE uncomfortable with, is the typical ad for something like, oh, dishwasher detergent or some kind of packaged dinner.

those ads ALWAYS show a woman/mother cooking or cleaning. Never a man/father doing those things.

And on the flip side, lawnmower and car repair commercials ALWAYS show a man mowing the lawn or changing the oil, never a woman.

I would say those are worse because rather than being ridiculous and obvious, the sexism is more subtle and insidious.

I wouldn't say *ban* them so much as encourage companies to equalize out their commercials...show the father making dinner some of the time (hell, in my family growing up my dad did most of the cooking). Show a woman changing the oil with a Fram filter...

A comment like that ought to be banned as SEXIST! >:(

You're perpetuating a sexist stereotype, that women are just always supposed to be beautiful!

In fact, BEAUTY, as a concept, is sexist and demeaning and should be banned.

Fuck, it's Europe, the only things that are not subject to being banned are tyranny and oppression!! :D

I just wonder why its a bad thing that men and women are different? Why can't we be different and celebrate our differences? We are all given the same opportunities so in that sense we are all veiwed equal but I am not equal to the next guy or girl. That doesn't mean that, as a whole I am better or they are better just that they may be better at one thing and I may be better at another. It all comes down to a simple word = respect!
As far as the banning goes, there is this thing called freedom, and that also means that people are free to be sexist even if its wrong.
As for comercials showing a girl with a lawnmower, this would simply alienate the target group who, coincidentally and not because of sexists, are predominantly men. Its that plain and simple. Besides, how does forcing them to have a woman sell a mower any better? Either portrail can be viewed as sexist and be offensive to someone. Besides, someone somewhere will be offended no matter what is said or done. On top of that, when has it become the governments job to ensure people aren't offended? I have the right to say or do what I want and no matter what I say or do people will be offended.....and I may get offended that you are offended...so who has to stop what they are doing in this situation? I am offended that you may call me sexist because I said that men and women are different, so should the government shut you up?

On another note, one of my soap boxes is the fact that models and celebs photos are so highly altered that, even with surgery none could actually look the way they are portrayed. I know because I studied this as part of my degree in graphic arts. I had to learn how to make these alterations to photos. It makes me angery that girls are given a completely impossible concept of beauty and frankly, what the industry sometimes puts forth as beautiful is sometimes revolting like the anorexic stoner look! However, is it the governments job to stop this? NO!! It is the governements job to govern the country not the thoughts of the people which make up the country! A government should have its limits regarding where its power can reach because without limits the only end result is total power and total control.
