JohnRich 4 #1 May 14, 2008 News:"Obama, speaking at the start of a two-day swoop through Oregon, let it slip that during this marathon 16-month Democratic presidential nomination struggle, he had already visited 57 states with one more to go. That's not counting Alaska and Hawaii, he said, which his staff decided aren't important enough to visit yet." jcd11235 0 #2 May 14, 2008 As much as I would love to make fun of him for his mistake, it sounds like an honest mistake, saying 57 when he intended to say 47. I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually believe there are 60 states. As many speeches as any of the candidates have given in the past 12+ months, it's nearly inevitable that they misspeak in a manner similar to a typo occasionally.Math tutoring available. idrankwhat 0 #4 May 14, 2008 Gettin' kinda desperate round these here parts. Let' see, can we hit Obama with a crazy preacher thing? Nah, McCain's already got a couple of those on retainer himself. Hmmm....I know, tax returns! Nope, Obama's got him on that one too. Inexperience! Darn, that Sunn...Shia...uni....ite thing, dag nabbit! If we don't come up with something soon we're going to have to talk about real issues!!!! (GASP!)

Guam did have a primary, and there are probably a few other territories. Perhaps those are being counted. But seems more likely that the copy editor messed up. When he says something like "I don't understand economics very well," get back to us.

nerdgirl 0 #8 May 14, 2008 Yes, he did say "57 states, I think one left to go." (Video embedded at linked url.) He goes onto to say that he wanted to go to Alaska & Hawaii but his staff would not justify it. He meant 47. It was a dumb gaff. Put in the same category as this gaff/mispeak. Same with McCain, he too, was impressive in person. Obama had no teleprompter when I saw him, and I was impressed with his ability to answer questions from a very broad, extremely conservative audience. Everyone misspeaks from time to time.
