Do you know who Willie Sutton was? He had an insight that you seem to lack.

Funny thing is, Willie claimed he never said that.....

Correct - it *was* Leona Helmsley, as I thought.

Whoosh. You are several posts slow. Rehmwa gets it.

And a bank robber is germane to a discussion about a consumption tax, how?

Why don't you go ahead and enlighten us plebes with your blinding wisdom and insight.

Mike - the quote attributed to Willie is a glib one

reporter - why did you rob all those banks?
Willie - "Because that's where the money is"

Interesting that this is used in a tax discussion when the topic is larceny...

the other quote "go where the money is.....and go there often"

Many taxes are robbery - especially when supporting social programs. I think it's a great acknowledgment by the prof. Though he'd NEVER say it directly.

I did read the quotes (mainly because I remembered the quote being from Helmsley) and I do agree with most taxes being robbery by gov't fiat.

The Prof's humor was a bit obtuse in comparison to the rest of the thread.

I didn't catch the humor, John - my apologies.

If by "obtuse", you mean subtle or even obscure and requiring a bit of coffee, then I agree with your new def of 'obtuse'

I think he meant the sort of humor of the snobbish elite - who is dismayed when everyone doesn't understand his little (and extremely convoluted) joke.

But he's not alone in that one. Everyone has their own cloud in the sky.
