souleh 0 #1 June 26, 2007 FBI wants to stop American students travelling Quote... The FBI wants the universities to impose rules that will stop US university students from working late at the campus, travelling abroad, showing an interest in their colleagues' work, or have friends outside the United States, engaging in independent research, or making extra money without the prior consent of the authorities. ... At least for once the phrase 'War on Terror' hasn't popped up! 'buttplugs? where?' - geno

kelpdiver 2 #3 June 26, 2007 I know the Enquirer is somewhat more serious than they used to be, but it's still not the source I'd rely on. Given the number of foreign students, most of whom will go home afterwards, it would be a pointless exercise to try to curtail the others.
NCclimber 0 #4 June 26, 2007 From other articles I could find, it sounds like the FBI is pushing guidelines for protecting information, which is quite different than the quote in the OP.
souleh 0 #5 June 26, 2007 Friction mate. It's a play on words. The story is actually true, as reported by quite a few sites. Admittedly, I'm sure there's a degree of tabloid journalism there somewhere.. http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/2007/06/24/fbi-to-restrict-student-freedoms/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pressesc.com%2F01182668252_espionage_indicators&frame=true http://www.google.com/search?q=FBI+wants+students+to+stop+travelling&hl=en&start=30&sa=N 'buttplugs? where?' - geno
jakee 1,254 #6 June 26, 2007 Quote Friction mate. Oh yeah. Well that doesn't even make sense! But still, I'd imagine it's one of those things where the FBI says "wouldn't it be a good idea if..." and everyone else says "Get stuffed"Do you want to have an ideagasm? willard 0 #7 June 26, 2007 Those things listed as items the FBI wants to stop are just a list of acivities for university people to watch for as possible indicators of espionage, not things the FBI wants to prohibit. My feeling is that the univeristy people will ignore the feds on this, just as it should be. Most of those activities are an important and integral part of graduate and undergraduate student life. The only thing in that list I don't do on a regular basis is traveling abroad.
souleh 0 #8 June 27, 2007 I guess it's like that chemical registration list (or whatever it was) that I recall reading about. Something like the FBI wanted your universities to log, register and submit details of many many chemicals, most of which weren't particularly harmful. When it was realised this would get in the way of smooth operation of the dept's, they banded together and objected to it. Suffice to say, that list is now smaller! Someone in the media saw the list and decided to embellish the facts with a bit of fiction. The only way our rights were involved was someone abusing the right of free speach by telling falsehoods. The FBI asked universities to watch for these signs, and most will ignore the request. Those that do what the feds asked will soon realize the rediculous nature of the request. No new laws were passed, no executive order given, nothing. Just a request.
