Actually the US declared war on Germany first, on December 11. WRONG WRONG WRONG To the Congress of the United States: On the morning of Dec. 11 the Government of Germany, pursuing its course of world conquest, declared war against the United States. The long-known and the long-expected has thus taken place. The forces endeavoring to enslave the entire world now are moving toward this hemisphere. Never before has there been a greater challenge to life, liberty and civilization. Delay invites great danger. Rapid and united effort by all of the peoples of the world who are determined to remain free will insure a world victory of the forces of justice and of righteousness over the forces of savagery and of barbarism. Italy also has declared war against the United States. I therefore request the Congress to recognize a state of war between the United States and Germany, and between the United States and Italy. billvon 2,463 #28 December 12, 2005 Yeah, but that was back when Congress declared war. So that's an outmoded way of thinking.
chuckbrown 0 #29 December 12, 2005 Sorry, Professor, but your original post was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. You said Germany and Italy declared war on the US on Dec. 12. I corrected you that the US declared war on Germany on Dec. 11. In fact, Roosevelt's speech to Congress requesting a declaration of war (which you just cited) is evidence that you were WRONG. chuteless 1 #37 December 13, 2005 The first and second world wars were really the same war in two stages. In November 1918, German did not surrender, but agreed to sign an armistice, which by dictionary definition is a short truce. The Allies forbid Germany to make war materials, especially aircraft, but they did it anyhow. Hitler rose to power and as soon as he got into France, he blew up the railway car where the Armistice was signed. And the ar continued, with a new batch of young 20 yrs old men willing to die for nothing. It really is amazing, that ever since Cain killed Abel, man has had a fondness for killing and maiming other members of the human race. They would find any excuse, the color of their skin, coveting their possessions, taking their land, and all the time manufacturing better ways of killing. As much as Bush and others talk of peace in the Middle East...with his stupid "road map", there will NEVER be peace until Jesus Christ returns...and that will not be too far in the future. Until then....the killing goers on, and flag draped coffins come back to be buried. Bill Cole .
