Off-Topic Computer Question

Recommended Posts

Hey.
Any of you other net-admin type folks out there know how to get a MS Exchange 5.0 server to 5.5? The only media we have at work is for 5.0, even though our system is 5.5. I see service packs to get from 5.0 to 5.0 sp2 and from 5.5 to 5.5 sp4, but nothing on how to get from 5.0 to 5.5. I looked on the MS site without finding anything really helpful. I posted to the MS Exchange newsgroup, but haven't gotten an answer yet.
We have a license for the software here at work, but the consultants who set up the system before I started working here were pretty bad about leaving documentation and even the software they used to set up the systems.
On a related note, how have people found Exchange 2000? Eventually, I'll get a copy to evaluate here, but I haven't done it yet.
Thanks!

Sorry pal. I don't do Microsoft stuff.

Do you think it's a coincidence that the two most famous things to be produced at Berkeley were 1) the UNIX operating system and 2) acid?

Wildblue,
We have 5.0 on one new machine and 5.5 on an existing one. I'm trying to get the 5.0 box up to 5.5. Whoever set the first system up didn't leave any docs or discs beyond the factory 5.0 disc.
Alphons,
We are blue-screen free, but we stick with MS because that is what the boss wants. Oh well.

Well.... they are 2 different versions of software. And as such they require 2 different Licences. The 5.5 install can only be done off 5.5 media. 5.0 can only be done from 5.0. There is no way to apply "service packs" to upgrade. Sorry.

Phree,
We have a valid licenses for both 5.0 and the 5.5 upgrade, just no media. I know you can't use service packs for the upgrade, but I thought I'd find the upgrade available.
Someone on the Exchange newsgroup said the only way to get it would be to buy Exchange 2000. That seems silly, considering that we have a 5.5 license and don't need to go to 2000.
Ideas?

The reason they told you 2000 is because all Autherized Microsoft dealers were required to quit selling anything less then 2000 earlier this year.
You can contact Microsoft and order just the media for like $15-20, but they require you to have a valid licence that they can verify first.
BTW Exchange 2000 is a really sweet product, but way to overpriced.

The former is called BSD, the latter LSD.
Coincidence? Nah, prolly not :-)
I'm only a BSD fanatic though; no LSD. Guess that makes me a wimp.
