Jumping Smoke

Recommended Posts

My mom finally came out to see me jump this weekend, I guess after a year of asking her she finaly decided I must know what I'm doing but she couldn't see me in the air until I was under canopy and even then had a hard time figuring out which chute was mine so I want to jump with smoke but the DZO say's that it will ruin my gear with the dye?? Does it?? can it be cleaned?? Is there a good brand of smoke that won't ruin my gear?

you will get dye on the leg of your jumpsuit, and its hard to get rid of it. be aware of where your feet are when you dump the rig, because if the pilot chute hits the smoke bomb, it will melt the PC and you'll have a dandy malfunction.

If its only for one jump, take a bag of flour, and open the top and as you are in freefall, shake it gfently....it gives a nice white trail against a blue sky, and easy to see...no damage to anything.

be sure to get a small bag.....about 1 or 2 lbs most.

I've jumped smoke before and it didn't do anything to my suit or gear. Just have to be aware of it sticking off your leg and be sure you're stable in freefall. I wouldn't advise sit flying or anything like that with it, but belly to earth with the right type of holster, i don't see a problem with

another way in which you can manage it, is to WIRE the smoke bomb to a stick about 12 inches long, and that way you are holding it away from your face, suit, and gear. Remember to hold it ( or the flour) in the hand you dont use to activate your main.

The flour is the best for a one shot jump deal. Fly base and let other come to you. I had one guy fly through the flour and he ate an unbaked cake for about 60 minutes. It really was funny to see.

Dont shake the flour too hard or have too large an opening in the top of the bag....you'll lose it all at once. You'll find it works great with a clear blue sky.

I've worn smoke bombs on many boot brackets, and you WILL NEVER get it out of your jumpsuit or off your footwear.

Red smoke stains, for sure. If you jump smoke you have got to have a certain bracket. This bracket cures the most problems that smoke causes.

Flour is the best damn idea seriously, I did not think of that.
I think I may do that just for fun.

You can color flour. A person here colored the flour different colors. Then made them up in bags for bombs to be used in a bomb contest. (closest to target wins)

I have NO idea how this was done.
I have NO idea how it will show up in the sky.
I like the idea alot, however.

Maybe in this instance is where you should use red.
Over the years, I believe red is best color against any background. (for suits that is)

Defiantly flour for this jump, is my vote. Yep, flour.

ps. Everyone I know here has the same bracket. It has been a real long time since I knew of someone getting this design of bracket. So I dont remember the process. (But I could find out.)

Smoke stains! [:/]

It's real hard to get off your jumpsuit...
but will somewhat wash off Z-po material...
just takes a LOT of time and effort. :|

I agree with Chuteless on the flour...to an extent,

As with wiring a smoke to a stick.....
not a good idea for a relatively inexperienced jumper....
there may be a something comes about causing you
to drop / let go of a stick n' smoke...

Cut a 2 inch hole in the bottom corner of a 2 lb. flour bag....
put some masking tape over the hole,
then tape the whole bag to your lower outside leg...
as you exit rip off the tape covering the hole
and that will usually work well.

If it's under canopy you want to distinguish yourself,
get a couple of those Cray paper 2.5in by 100 foot
party rolls....
when you open tie one end to your harness
and drop the roll(s) behind you....

A beautiful streamer will wave behind you,
and if it should get caught on anything
it will just tear right off.

Hot smoke will not only 'melt' a section of the pilot chute ...
but the bracket may snag it, causing a horseshoe...
or an upside-down streamer should you elect to cut away.

Don't jump any kind of extra stuff unless
you have been thoroughly trained by someone
that has plenty of experience on that type of gear...

DON'T DROP ANYTHING ON ANYONE!

And....

I hate to be a Killjoy,

if the pilot chute melts at all, you are stuck with it. There has been many deaths "in the old days" when pilot chutes melted to the boot bracket and the guy couldnt get rid of the main. I assure you, its a deadly scenario.

As for the flour, you cant control the amount that comes out if it on your foot, and its usually all at once in a big cloud. Partially opening the top, you can gently shake it, and even keep a finger over the part of the flap, and you can control it to a nice even trail

An experienced jumoper should be able to hang on to a stick with an M 18, but not a novice. I have seen large grass fires caused by droppage.

One just has to remember to keep it in the hand not used for deployment

With 150 jumps I would say you don't need a hot smoke canister strapped to your leg. Try this: Bring Mom to the DZ, make sure she has good sunglasses, get a low pass and do a hop n pop. You will be the only jumper in the sky, the plane will be lower at exit altitude, and she'll have no problem picking you out. For exrta insurance, have an experienced jumper stand next to her and help her to spot the plane before you leave, and give a play by play during your canopy ride. Safe. Simple. Smoke free.

I can get you a copy of the paperwork
if you're interested in getting the license Sparky...

I think it's about 350 bucks and a test....

and a background check....

Mine went pretty quick since I once
held a security clearance,
and had to do the whole FBI thing
when we adopted the kids from Russia...

just don't tell them about that sheep thing! :P
