Can't get DSL...Options?

Recommended Posts

OK....so....I'm getting a twitch now. I got all acustomed to having the speed of DSL and thought I had left dial up in the dust. Now I have moved to Podunkville and can't get DSL out here. What's the options? Is the DirectTV satellite any good? I already have DirectTV here so it wouldn't be a big deal to order internet access. If I went to cable I'd have to order it and I'm sure that would cost an arm and a leg! [:/] What's the options and how do they compare to the near flawless performance of SBC DSL?

The speed of two-way satellite is pretty decent. The major problem is that the latency is very high, i.e., it takes a long time for the signal to make the round trip. This means there is a delay between clicking and page loading that drives DSL users up the wall. It also makes playing games and doing some other real-time things difficult or impossible. Also, I don't know about other companies but DirecWay has a draconian Fair Access Policy that they use to automatically rate limit people who are using a lot of bandwidth.

Terrestrial wireless (basically super long range WiFi) is becoming available in many areas. In my neighborhood the price is very competitive with DSL, the bandwidth is better, and the people I know who use it have few complaints.

You'll need a very clear "line-of-sight" for the internet with DirecTV. You may not be fond of the latency either, likely over 800 ms. That's not good if you like any kind of online gaming or have to use a VPN. Downstream I think is limited to 500kbps.

If you like how SBC has been in the past, you might try ISDN, it's not super fast, but very reliable (128kbps). It costs a little more too. You might ask them if they have IDSL (ISDN-DSL).

Cable is an option worth considering as the distance thresholds don't typically apply. Depends on your provider, but if it's Comcast, or Charter, you should be okay. Adelphia is struggling. You might want to check with your power company too, some power utilities are providing Internet service. Some by fiber!

You got that right. Wireless is the way to go!

The initial startup costs might be high (100-800) but the results are great. I have wireless at my house and I see between 5 and 7 megabits/sec both up and down. Latency is a thing of the past. I ping google or cisco and average between 6 and 8ms!!

Try looking on DSLreports.com for wireless ISPs in your area. There are more and more small WISPs starting up. There's like 4 that I know of in my neighborhood.

OK.....just found out I CAN get DSL from Earthlink but it's $49.95 per month with 20 hours free. That's the first time I have EVER heard of ANYONE limiting DSL!?!?!?!?! I'll keep searching.....:S

You'll want to double-check anyone claiming they can provide DSL in your area. If your local telco can't do it (due to distance) then it's going to be difficult for anyone else to do the same, as they use the same facilities.

OK I'm confused. I'm using cable and there was no installation. Make a call, they drop off the modem, and bang. It just rolls in on the same coax that the cable comes in on... does it work differently for different systems?

NO DOUBT...............I worked for Bellsouth for 2 years and have an ADSL certification in a drawer somewhere. :D I know full well that some will PROMISE service but just NEVER be able to deliver. Bottom line is....more than 15,000 feet from the DSLAM.....it's sketchy......[:/]

Funny thing is.............I can get a FREAKIN T-1 installed for $70 per month from Worldcom. :D That's CERTAINLY a WAY better deal than $49.95 for 20 hours of sketchy earthlink service. :D

You've answered your question. If I could get a T1, I'd do it without a second thought. Jeez...I thought you had a problem.:D:S:P

I never knew a T-1 could be so cheap! It does cost $325 for a router but once again......crappy, sketchy DSL or a T-1? I think the answer is pretty simple.....B| Plus........I used to pay $70+ for a phone line(Which I made maybe 2 or 3 calls per month on) plus DSL anyway. I'll actually come out cheaper with the T-1! :D

are they guarunteeing any type of uptime or quality of service for that T1?

Most Tier 1 providers do. Likely "Five-9s", 55ms, <1% packet loss. T1s are inherently robust, you can do anything with them.

Clay, if your own router, you could likely do your own VoIP with nary an clipping at all, and still get 1.4+Mbps. B|

Yeah..........I have never heard of a T-1 without some sort of garauntee.

Ask them if that includes the ISP. Sometimes cheap pipes like that don't include it, not that it matters too much, if anything it gives you flexibility.
