They didn't prepare me in teacher's college

Recommended Posts

Today I had a situation in my ninth grade algebra class that I was totally unprepared to deal with....so i welcome any thoughts.

I had a student who was refusing to do any work. I would not allow him to talk to the other students, who were working hard. In order to get attention he.....are you ready??.....

HE ATE A PRINGLE'S CAN...not a can of pringles....the fu**ing can!!!!!! This is a bright 15 year old kid.

There is no such topic covered in the classes I took in college to become a teacher.

It was one of the little ones. Does that make it any mroe normal??? He just took a bite out of the side and started chewing!!! I still cannot believe it. Of course now I am terrified that he is going to get sick and his family is going to try to sue me because I was not able to keep him from eating the can.

What a crazy day.

This is a kid that is crying out for help and needs it NOW. He has also showed you that he has no limits as to what he will do, which means that he could also become dangerous. Just remember there is a fine line between suicide and homicide. Get this kid help fast!

Ah, ok. I just had to get an accurate picture in my head. (and then try to stop laughing) :P I doubt it would make him sick (I've eaten weirder things), although it probably didn't do him any good.

I wish I could tell ya somthing that would help, but I'm clueless. :S

Needless to say, he's got problems. Just because some kid is smart with school-work, doesn't mean everything is hunky-dory in his/her life. However, I'd hate to be in the bathroom listening to him grunt and groan trying to shit that can out! :DB|[:/]

This is definitely not normal behavior. Sometimes the biggest troublemakers have ADHD or ADD or some other variant of attention problems. There may even be problems at home.

Also, if a kid is too smart for a certain class, chances are the kid's gonna get bored and start acting out.

A psychological evaluation and IQ test may be in order... but I think all you can do is notify the parents and school nurse what happened, and let them determine what the best course of action is.

Anne, As much as I think every child needs attention, I have to agree with Dave on this one. Start with the Principal, and let him/her figure it out from there. Make it a point to quietly ask to see him in the hall (to not make a scene in class and give him what he wants, attention). Once in the hall, escort straight to the office....

See now why I love teaching K-3? My monday class is a 4-5 year old preschool Title-1 class (real school, not head start), and this being my second year teaching computers in that class...well, I love it enough to almost make me change my major from Elementary Ed to Early Childhood. Problem is I want to teach, not end up stuck in a daycare....:S

BTW...this is the smae kid who ate one of my piece of chalk a few weeks ago. His counselor and principal are certianly involved. His mom thinks that any problem I have in class is due to my teaching skills (or lack thereof.) It is never her precious son's fault, problem, whatever....

I simply forwarded this info on the counelor and principal...there is little I can do at this point.

Ahhh, the old denial problem. This happens more often than most people think. That mother is in for a rude awakening, especially if this kid is the only problem child you've had to deal with. I don't envy you... good luck!

In my eight years of teaching I have dealt with a lot of kids with a variety of problems. I just have never had to deal with a kid eating a pringles can. Thankfully this kid is messed up enough across the board that I don't have to deal with this alone. His other teachers and principal will back me up.

Chalk? Ouch. During my HS years, I had a bad habit of chewing on things (pen caps, paper, etc...) as some kind of a stress reaction, so the pringles can didn't seem so weird to me, but chalk is just going a little too far.

People like that piss me off. Unfortunatly that attitude seems all too common lately.

Send that kid to my grandmother! If she wasn't 90 years old, she could probably handle him easy.

She happens to be the first special education teacher ever in the Nashville, TN area. She took on all comers. It didn't matter - smart, dumb, LD, ADHD, ADD, etc. She had the patience.

It's the regular classes that these kids just don't fit in without some serious therapy or psychological help.

At least that ignorant mom will have to deal with the principal and whatnot. She won't have any excuse to blame you for anything pretty soon. Well, the worst that could happen is she could withdraw the student. Are you teaching in public school?

Right, right, since ALL of your students are eating pringles cans and chalk. :S

If he needs attention, pay more attn to him. Call on him to answer every other question. Hard questions. Wear his ass out.

Yeah it's weird. Now that the egocentric generation has grown up and have teenage offspring they expected eveyrone else but themselves to raise their kids.

Kids go to school to be taught, not to be raised. A good percentage of parents forget this to some degree.

Mike it's not all that bad
I deal with those kids every day:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Ignore him and ask him to saty at lunch or recess to complete work if he refuses to do as asked, send him on through your Behaviour managment system.
I deal with stuff like that EVERY day:):D:D:D:D:D

we have lost control of the kids. not our fault so to speak but we have lost control or our society. shame on us. i don't believe we can assume or accept responsibity for the regression of today's youth (not the new melinium's) but rather the society WE have created for the past 50 years.
