Living in Florida.

Recommended Posts

I graduate in a year or so and I have been toying with the Idea of moving to Florida so I can have year round jumping.

Is the cost of living high? Is it a good place to live? Can an entry level EE make it over there?
Some day I will have the best staff in the world!!!

Depends on what you consider high, and where in FL you live. Coming from southern California, I thought that food and gas were less expensive than I was used to. Rents were about the same, although property values are much lower than in California.

If you can spend the summers someplace else, sure...

Great place to live .. as long as you can get an above ground bomb shelter kind of house that Hurricanes or tornados cant blow away.. and high enough that a storm surge cant flood it.

Be sure to get commercial grade airconditioning units for the house.. and a HUGE back up diesel generator to provide power when the hurricane takes out the power grid for 2 months.

Oh did I mention a vehicle that is impervious to being hit by retirees who should have had their drivers licenses removed 15 years before.

Oh... and a really good supply of insect repellent....Skeeters.. sabre tooth gnats...and fire ants are always fun too..

Another fun thing is grass.. looks like grass.. but there are these little seed pods that they call sand spurs.. fun stuff when going barefoot.

I moved to Florida 6 years ago and love it. I live in SE Florida now, but will be moving to Orlando in about a month.

Cost of living used to be real cheap until the housing market exploded. In SE Florida houses are still 300k+, but prices seem to be coming down a lot in the rest of the state since there's still land to build on.

The job market is also pretty good, I'd imagine you'd do alright as an EE. Orlando has about 5 dropzones within 2 hours of it, so if you can find a job around there you'd be set as far as jumping goes.

It's hot down here, but you get used to it. And the hurricanes aren't that big a deal. You just learn that once a year or so you won't have power for a week or two and plan accordingly. :)

They're child's play compared to those things called Goat's heads in Idaho. they'll flatten a car tire.
