TheBile 0 #1 January 18, 2007 What is it with the popularity of blogs ? As a blogger, don't you feel that in the age where information is power that putting your daily/weekly antics and opinions up on a website for permanant record potentially dangerous ? Allowing those who would cause trouble and wish to do you harm perusal over information that you originally thought was perfectly innocent ? I remember the days when diaries used to be, primarily, the domain of teenage girls (arguably). Girls who would stab you with their "Best Friends" pen if they ever caught you trying to pick the lock on their drawer to sneak a peek. Or throw a hissy fit if they suspected their mother was trying to get an insight into their private life, under the guise of "Putting their clothes away". Now though there seems to be no such reservations to put the most intimate and personal experiences and opinions on the web for all to read, along with the assumption that people would spend good time during the day to read and be interested in what a complete stranger gets up to on an average day. Is it my mid thirties age that doesn't allow for my appreciation of this thing, or am I just ignorant of the rewards that this blogging thing offers ?Gerb I stir feelings in others they themselves don't understand. quade 4 #2 January 18, 2007 I read an interesting statistic the other day about blogs. It said that 99.999999% of all the blogs on the internet have exactly 1 reader (the author). And honest to God, unless you're Angelina or Britney or Jennifer, NOBODY cares who you're fuckin' or what was the last tree you hugged or what car you drive or . . . (even then -I- don't give a shit).quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Lindercles 0 #3 January 18, 2007 It's quite simple really. People love to talk about themselves. Blogging simply allows them to release their thoughts into cyber space so they don't have to deal with people's immediate reactions, which would most likely be blank stares, or worse, criticisms. It's part of the growing trend of technology bringing people together by forcing them apart. It is now possible to conduct an entire day's business without ever actually seeing anyone, and confide your deepest secrets in people without fear of reprisal. Hooray. skybytch 259 #4 January 18, 2007 I don't see much difference between posting on a blog and posting on an online forum. Except that what you type on an online forum stands a much better chance of being read by someone other than yourself.

It was useful for that. g"Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" Raddest Ho this side of Jersey #1 - MISS YOU OMG, is she okay? Douva 0 #13 January 18, 2007 If you're a teenage girl, maybe your blog is simply your online diary, but for some people, it's a public forum and a creative outlet. Most of the bloggers I know are intelligent, articulate adults with something to say. As a struggling writer, I use my blog as an occasional outlet for my writing energy. I get a lot of comments and compliments on it, so apparently it's not entirely unappreciated. For a lot of people, the process of writing a blog is an end unto itself. It's therapy. It's a way to get their thoughts in order. Think of it what you will, but it's hard to deny that blogging is a more meaningful use of one's time than post whoring on DZ.com.I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.

peregrinerose 0 #15 January 18, 2007 People are lonely... they go out less, spend less time with friends, more time staring at a computer monitor. Blogging is probably one way to reach out and try to feel some form of connection with other people. Seems to me there are better ways to go about doing that, but a lot of people are shy and don't know how to go about making real friends. Seems to me there are better ways to go about doing that, but a lot of people are shy and don't know how to go about making real friends. I don't have a blog, but rather expectorate my random thoughts through dz.com. It's the same basic concept though...I spend enough time out and about that sometimes it's nice to just relax at home with a few drinks and type on the computer. There aren't many people I want to talk on the phone with for hours, and I don't need to go over to a friend's house every night to validate our relationship. So I sit down in front of a machine and say one set of things while hearing another set of things and sometimes the sets overlap. None of this should be construed as indicating I'm particularly lonely or incapable of making real friends. That said, I could stand making smarter friends. murrays 0 #25 January 18, 2007 I read quite a few blogs regarding computers and computing. I don't read any on-line diary type blogs but, in some circumstances, they are very useful. For example, my wife was diagnosed with leukemia nearly a year and a half ago and I used a blog as my way of keeping friends and family up-to-date. It saved me answering the same questions over and over again. When my wife went to Seattle for a stem cell transplant, her sister/primary caregiver took over the blogging duties and then my wife learned to do it herself. It's an easy way of keeping people informed without them having to impose on you. Personally, I am very grateful that sites like Blogger exist and make it so easy and inexpensive to do what we did as it was very helpful to us.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
